Will Ferrell's character gets more screen time in the new Barbie trailer, and users on social media are already comparing the role to Lord Business in The LEGO Movie. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie stars Margot Robbie as the titular doll, which is based on the iconic Mattel toy. The film's supporting cast includes Ryan Gosling as Ken and Ferrell as the Mattel CEO.Ahead of Barbie's release date this summer, the first full-length trailer for the film just dropped, revealing more of the film's story and providing the first real look at Ferrell's character. Users on social media were quick to point out, however, that the actor's CEO character isn't dissimilar to his role as Lord Business in 2014's The LEGO Movie. Check out some of the tweets below:
Is Will Ferrell's Barbie Character Actually Like Lord Business?
On the surface, Ferrell's Barbie character is certainly not unlike Lord Business. They both wear suits with colorful ties and are in positions of capitalistic power. Upon closer inspection, however, it's very likely there's more to Barbie's Mattel CEO than meets the eye.
It seems unlikely, for starters, that a movie about a Barbie come to life would portray Mattel in too negative a light. Plus, Ferrell himself has previously offered up details regarding his character, describing the CEO as "insensitive" and "weird," but also teasing that he's more complicated than that. This comment is fitting, considering the Barbie movie itself seems like it will be a surprisingly thoughtful and meta exploration of the doll and its impact on the world.
The trailer suggests that Ferrell's CEO character will start out as an antagonist of sorts, seemingly determined to prevent a Barbie and Ken incursion into the real world, but it's likely that he will eventually become an ally or, at the very least, an eccentric neutral character. Although the latest Barbie trailer reveals more about the story, the film is still playing its cards close to its chest, meaning a number of surprises regarding Ferrell's character could still be in store.
