The full Barbie trailer offers a closer look at the buzzy new film. Adapted from the world of the iconic Mattel doll Barbie and the various characters in her life, including her perfect boyfriend Ken, the film is due to premiere in theaters on July 21. Margot Robbie stars as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, though other versions of the characters will be played by Hari Neff, Issa Rae, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Simu Liu. The film was directed by Lady Bird and Little Women's Greta Gerwig.

After a teaser caught fire at the end of last year, Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled the brand-new official trailer for the film today, just three months ahead of the Barbie release date.

Although the film lives up to its title by bringing the colorful world of Barbie to life, the trailer also focuses on the plight of Gosling's Ken. In a world where everything is perfect, he has a lot of competition for Barbie's attention, so when she takes a road trip to the real world, he decides to stow away and come along.

Everything the Barbie Trailer Reveals About the Upcoming Film

The new trailer for the film expands greatly upon the 2001: A Space Odyssey-inspired Barbie teaser that was previously released. Perhaps the most important factor here is the outright confirmation that nearly every single member of the huge ensemble cast is playing a different version of either Barbie or Ken. While that has been rumored for some time, it wasn't officially revealed until today's trailer.

However, there are a few more plot and character elements that have also been teased. This includes the fact that the Barbies and Kens know that the real world exists and can travel to it at will, like when Barbie meets with Will Ferrell's toy company CEO. Whether the Barbies and Kens are actually dolls or just merely the inspiration for dolls remains unknown, however. This is a factor that is complicated by Kate McKinnon's Barbie, who seems to be a doll who has been given a makeover by a kid with a pair of scissors.

Another major facet of the Barbie trailer is its humor, which blends open-hearted family comedy with a slightly edgy sensibility. There are multiple jokes of a sexual nature in the trailer, but they are hidden behind puns and the characters' complete lack of understanding about sexuality. It shows that the film was designed to be fun for kids but without alienating any nostalgic parents who are tagging along.
