New Barbie trailer reveals a more detailed look at the highly-anticipated movie. Directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, the upcoming film stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, leading a star-studded ensemble cast that includes Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Ncuti Gatwa, and many others. Barbie, which commenced filming in March of this year, will be the first live-action movie based on the doll franchise by Mattel of the same name. During the window of filming, several set photos and videos from Barbie went viral, though plot details still remain tightly under wraps.

Each tease for the Barbie movie has left audiences even more excited about the Robbie-led romp, with the small glimpses of the colorful wardrobe released online only adding to the hype. Recently, Robbie confirmed that the film will even feature Barbie Dream Houses, stating that the upcoming summer movie "will be everything you ever dreamed of." Now, Warner Bros. has unveiled an official trailer for the upcoming film, letting viewers in to finally experience a snippet of Barbie's pastel-pink world and giving more details on the story. Why People Are So Excited For The Barbie Movie

Margot Robbie waves at a pastel pink toy town in Barbie movie

Based on the Barbie trailer, it’s clear that the creators are aware that anything related to Barbie and associated toys comes with a healthy dose of nostalgia, which the trailer makes light of in hilarious fashion. That childhood nostalgia, paired with the brilliant Barbie cast, the promise from several cast members that the film will go in unexpected directions, and statements from Gerwig and Robbie about the environment on set while filming have all contributed to the massive online hype surrounding the Barbie movie. In addition, the teaser’s homage to Stanley Kubrik’s 2001: A Space Odyssey with Robbie’s Barbie as the monolith confirms that Barbie will be leaning in fully to its absurdity, which will likely have hilarious results.

Rather than being a live-action adaptation of one of the several animated movies or television shows about Barbie, Gerwig’s Barbie clearly takes things a step further, with the film’s marketing suggesting that it will be interrogating the legacy of Barbie with a satirical and feminist angle. The biting commentary that can be expected from Gerwig combined with the over-the-top, campy glimpses of the movie that have been released and the quirky, purely comedic tone that has been teased for Barbie by cast members have made it one of the most anticipated movies of summer 2023. The brief trailer is likely to drive the fervor up higher, with Robbie looking even more perfect as Barbie in the clip than she did in the previously leaked set photos.

New Barbie Trailer Still Leaves Plenty Under Wraps

While the new teaser offers glimpses of Liu, Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rae, and brief shots of others, it doesn’t reveal much about the plot, though its tribute to 2001: A Space Odyssey could provide some hints. With Barbie appearing as a monolith, which connects the past, present, and future in Kubrick’s film and often represents transitions in human evolution, the legacy and future of Barbie for mankind is clearly a potential theme. Even more intriguing is whether this homage means that one of the multiple Barbies or Kens in the upcoming movie could suffer HAL’s fate in the Kubrick film and go dark, challenging their purpose as dolls and perhaps forcing an intervention from Ferrell’s CEO character. Hopefully, another trailer will arrive in the coming months and provide more clarity on the overall plot of the Barbie movie.
