New photos from the set of Barbie show Margot Robbie looking sad as the movie's titular character. Based on the popular Mattel toy of the same name, Barbie is directed by Oscar-nominee Greta Gerwig from a script written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. The film, which is expected to release in 2023, was reported to be in development as far back as 2014, but it was only recently that production on the project got underway when Warner Bros. took over production duties from Sony. Plot details for the anticipated film are currently being kept under wraps.

Although details regarding the film's story have yet to be officially released, photos from Barbie's set have been making the rounds recently on social media, with fans finally getting a first look at various aspects of the film. Prior to the film entering production, however, Barbie's casting announcements were widely reported, especially the reveal that Ryan Gosling would portray Ken, Barbie's counterpart. In addition to Robbie and Gosling, Barbie features an impressive cast, including the likes of Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, America Ferrera, Nicola Coughlan, and Kate McKinnon, among others.

In a new Barbie set photo first, posted by @averagelyjoe on Twitter, Robbie's titular character looks sad as she sits next to a tree by herself. It's unclear if Robbie is taking a quick break between takes or if she's in the midst of filming a sad scene as Barbie, but the image shows a different side to the film than what fans have seen thus far. Check out the new set photo below:

Although the circumstances of the new photo remain unclear, it is already a standout from the plethora of other Barbie set photos and videos floating around on social media just because of Robbie's expression. With vibrant outfits and big smiles, Robbie, Gosling, and the other cast members look very happy in most of the other sneak-peeks at the production, which has given fans an idea of what the tone of the film will be like. As demonstrated in the image above, however, even a movie about Barbie needs drama and moments of sadness (or potentially just a moment for the film's star to gather her thoughts).

Despite the many set photos and videos that have surfaced in recent days, much still remains unknown about Robbie's upcoming film. There have been rumors that Will Ferrell could be playing Barbie's villain, but, other than Robbie and Gosling as Barbie and Ken, respectively, no other character names or details have been officially confirmed. While the film certainly appears to be a fun and over-the-top romp judging from the material released thus far, the latest set photo of Robbie suggests that there could be a deeper layer to Barbie than initially thought.
