Some new Barbie fans posters turn Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling into plastic dolls. A live-action Barbie movie has been in the works for quite some time, with initial reports emerging as far back as 2009. Several big names have been attached to the project — from Diablo Cody and Amy Schumer, to Anne Hathaway. However, Robbie was officially announced as the film’s lead in early 2019 before Gosling was confirmed to be playing Barbie’s boyfriend Ken in October 2021. Barbie also stars Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, and Michael Cera.

Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig (Ladybird, Little Women) is helming Barbie and co-wrote the script alongside Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story). The adaptation is being produced by Warner Bros. and Mattel Films, the film production division of the toy manufacturing company best known for creating the original Barbie dolls. As Barbie is currently filming in England, a first official look at Robbie’s titular character and, more recently, Gosling as a shirtless Ken, have been released. The images teased Barbie's technicolor setting and the uncanny accuracy of both Robbie and Gosling's live-action iterations of the beloved dolls.

Digital artist Samuel Chevé recently posted some art on Instagram that serves as posters for the upcoming Barbie movie. The pieces capitalize on the film’s conception and turn Robbie and Gosling into actual dolls. The actors' versions of Barbie and Ken even come equipped with their own boxes. Check it out below.

Seeing these Hollywood stars in doll form may be somewhat disturbing, but the above depiction isn’t far off from how the pair will actually look in the movie. Where Robbie’s photo saw her character driving a Barbie's iconic pink convertible, the latest image of Gosling highlights his bleach blonde hair, six-pack abs, and spray-tan, painting him as a comically perfect Ken. While that first look at Gosling's Ken has seemingly divided the internet, the photo very much signals that Barbie will be satire, which may look to deconstruct beauty standards with the help of its two objectively attractive leads.

Aside from conjecture, the tone of Gerwig and Baumbach’s Barbie is largely still a mystery. Given both filmmakers' track record and its source material, Barbie could look to explore themes of body positivity, feminism, and consumerism. It's likely that the film will also present a hilarious take on its iconic characters, considering the cast’s inclusion of comedic talent like Ferrell, Cera, and McKinnon. For now, however, interpretations like this new Barbie art are all audiences have to help imagine how Robbie and Gosling will bring these beloved figures to life when the film releases on July 21, 2023.
