Margot Robbie is gorgeously recreated as an anime Barbie in stunning fan art. Based on the classic Mattel toy series of the same name, the upcoming comedy is directed and co-written by acclaimed filmmaker Greta Gerwig. Margot Robbie stars as the central Barbie who finds herself cast from Barbieland. Joined by Ken (Ryan Gosling), the duo embark on a journey into the human world to find purpose and true happiness.
Artist recently Seiorai took to Instagram to share her impressive Barbie fan art where she recreated Robbie's eponymous doll in an anime style.
The artist frames the blonde doll in the style of the upcoming film's poster with Barbie's logo emblazoned across the image. Seiorai also provides a horizontally flipped image of the character and an extreme closeup that highlights Barbie's bright eyes.
Barbie Will Be A Unique Coming-Of-Age Story
Gerwig began her career in acting, gaining acclaim with her roles in the likes of Frances Ha, which she co-wrote, Maggie's Plan and 20th Century Women. She has since made a name for herself behind the camera as the writer-director of the lauded coming-of-age films Lady Bird and 2019's Little Women cinematic adaptation, earning Oscar nominations for both. Gerwig has set Barbie up to become her most unconventional take on the genre yet.
Set in a world filled with Barbies stuck in perpetual partying and pink, Robbie's version finds herself less-than-perfect, as exemplified by the latest Barbie trailer's scenes, where she contemplates her mortality and finally places her heels on the ground. Journeying into the human world as a figure created upon antiquated feminine stereotypes will provide Barbie with an immense sense of culture shock, kicking off an external and internal exploration of what it means to be a woman in modern society. As a doll crafted to be engulfed in happiness, Barbie will ultimately face reality's challenges and discover the breadth of her agency.
Gerwig recently revealed that her take on Barbie was inspired by the 1994 book Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher, which investigated the societal pressures girls face in their adolescence and how such pressures affect their maturity. With Barbie looking to bridge Gerwig's love of coming-of-age tales with explorations of modern femininity, the meta-fueled movie looks to have a lot more underneath the surface than expected from the eponymous doll.
