Fans of Dungeons & Dragons and the Baldur’s Gate series can expect to make a new outing to the Sword Coast this October in IDW’s new prequel comic Dungeons & Dragons: Mindbreaker.

In the Baldur’s Gate series of games, the player takes the role of various customizable characters partaking in several adventures in the Dungeons & Dragons’ setting of the Sword Coast. The player goes on several adventures in and around the metropolis of Baldur’s Gate and other iconic cities in the setting. In Baldur’s Gate 3, the player character is a customizable avatar kidnapped by the multiverse conquering Mindflayers, who have launched an invasion of the Forgotten Realms. After being experimented on, and implanted with a parasite that threatens to turn the player themselves into a Mindflayer, the player character is freed by the Mindflayer’s enemies and must find a way to remove the parasite and cease their transformation into a brain-sucking monster.

Dungeons & Dragons: Mindbreaker follows the adventurers Krydle, Shandie, Delina, Nerys, Minsc, and Boo as they return to their homeland following the previous adventures, only to find that evil threatens their home of Baldur’s Gate. This series will be the sixth entry in the Baldur’s Gate saga which features these characters in other adventures such as Legends of Baldur’s Gate, Shadow of the Vampire, and Frost Giant’s Fury. The series will span 5 issues and be available both in print and on digital comic distributors.

Dungeons & Dragons: Mindbreaker is written by Jim Zub with art from Eduardo Mello. Jim Zub returns to the series, having previously written all the other entries in the Baldur’s Gate saga. He is also known for writing the Samurai Jack comic series and Image Comic’s Wayward series. Eduardo Mello is a renowned illustrator for Fantasy Flight Games and Marvel Comics. Among his most recent projects are the Marvel Champion’s card game’s The Once and Future Kang expansion and the Winds of Numa series. The cover art released for the comic shows that Mello’s style captures and fluidly portrays the magic and martial skills which define Dungeons & Dragons’ combat.

Baldur’s Gate 3 may not see a full release until 2022, though fans of the Forgotten Realms can get further insight into the story in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons: Mindbreaker 5-issue mini-series. With the first issue being released in comic stores and digital distributors this October, adventurers can visit Baldur’s Gate on the Sword Coast a little bit before the incoming Mindflayer invasion.
