Baldur's Gate 3 places players at the center of the game's narrative, making each decision hold its own unique consequences. Unlike many other RPGs, Baldur's Gate 3 does not offer any indication as to what choice is right and relies on players' morals to dictate their influence on the world. While the narrative is full of different choices, there are a few conflicts that have a more significant impact on the storyline than the rest.

There are still many mysteries surrounding Baldur's Gate 3's main story, with each of the characters, questlines, and cutscenes continuously being updated and reworked for Act One. Despite the many changes that accompany BG3's various patches, the most important choices of the early game have yet to change. Players searching for the most impactful choices throughout the early access version of the game should keep an eye out for the following scenarios, and choose carefully when experiencing it for themselves.

Two of the most important choices that players will face occurs during character creation, before the main campaign has even started. Race and class are both decisions that will heavily impact gameplay and interactions with NPCs throughout the world. When choosing the race of Baldur's Gate 3's main character, players may not realize how far-reaching the consequences can be. Choosing to be a Drow or Half-Elf will result in some derogatory statements and discrimination, but will gain sympathy with other species that have also been marginalized, such as the Tieflings in Silvanus Grove. Baldur's Gate 3 currently has seven classes to choose from, each with an additional pair of subclasses that determine gameplay and add dialogue options related to each class' skills.

Baldur's Gate 3 Forces Players To Choose Allegiances Early On

Baldurs Gate 3 Tiefling

One of the first central conflicts encountered in Baldur's Gate 3 is a three-sided dispute between Tieflings, Druids, and goblins. When players first encounter these factions, a battle between human mercenaries and goblins will be occurring outside of the Druid Grove's gate. A caravan of Tiefling refugees on their way to Baldur's Gate have been sheltering within Silvanus Grove to hide from the goblins, who have slaughtered their people relentlessly as they travelled on the road. Unfortunately, due to the danger posed by the goblins, the Druids are performing a ritual to seal the Grove off and expel the Tieflings from their safe haven.

Players have several options in Baldur's Gate 3 to resolve the conflict, but each has lasting consequences. Wiping out the Druids to secure the Tieflings' haven in the Grove will make Halsin, a Druid healer, hostile toward the player and their party. Coming to an agreement with the goblins and launching an attack on Silvanus Grove will result in the Tieflings and Druids all perishing, and allows players to align themselves with a mystical figure known as the Absolute. Alternatively, players can side with Kagha and exile the Tieflings to certain death.

The biggest plot point in Baldur's Gate 3 concerns the player character's infection with an Illithid tadpole parasite, which cannot be removed during the available gameplay sequences. The tadpole grants players and their companions significant advantages should the "Illithid" option be selected during cutscenes, opening unique dialogue opportunities and granting access to new powers and information that would otherwise be beyond reach. While this may seem like an amazing arrangement, using Illithid powers comes at the risk of further advancing the player's transformation into a Mindflayer and plagues the party with nightmares.

Additionally, several companions will disapprove of utilizing the tadpole's powers, potentially endangering the relationships between players and their party. The long-reaching consequences of using the Illithid powers has yet to be seen, though it is certainly a significant plot point for Baldur's Gate 3's main storyline. While the full consequences of these player choices have yet to be revealed, Larian Studios has consistently assured the playerbase that their choices will greatly impact the story. Baldur's Gate 3's current early access content has proven that statement true, with complex narrative and cinematic shifts occurring based on significant player decisions.
