Every since the early access version of Baldur's Gate 3 was revealed back in 2020, developers at Larian Studios have been steadily working to expand their newest computer RPG, implementing new rules and abilities from the Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition tabletop RPG, patching strange bugs, improving the graphics, and introducing new areas for the full release. Still, Larian Studios still has a long way to go before Baldur's Gate 3 is a fantasy experience as complete and detailed as its Divinity: Original Sin games. Some new features need to be implemented that would improve the experience overall.

The first two Baldur's Gate computer RPGs, designed by BioWare, were highly successful video game adaptations of Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition that strongly influenced western fantasy RPG franchises such as Dragon Age, Pillars of Eternity, and Larian Studio's own Divinity: Original Sin series. The turn-based combat in Baldur's Gate 3, adapted from Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules, is different from the "real-time with pause" mechanics of its prequels, but its social interactions, personal quests, and companion interactions are "classical" elements of the Baldur's Gate series.

A recent update to the Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access lets players explore a new Underdark region called the Grymforge and implements the versatile D&D Sorcerer class. Several subsequent patches from Larian Studios have also greatly improved the playability of Baldur's Gate 3, removing frustrating bugs and giving players more opportunities to interact with the game world in clever ways. There are still many things Larian Studios needs to work on before it can remove the "Early Access" suffix from Baldur's Gate 3 - not just patches and gameplay tweaks, but several other features as well.

Baldur's Gate 3 Needs More Class And Race Options

Baldurs Gate 3 character background

Currently, players of the Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access can choose between eight classes and eight races when creating a new character. The eight class options are Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, Rogue, Ranger, Warlock, Druid, and Sorcerer, while the species players can choose from are Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Half-Elf, Githyanki, Tiefling, and Drow. These race/class options are broad as is, but don't cover the full scope of character creation options in D&D 5th Edition. Once Larian Studios implements the Bard, Barbarian, Monk, Paladin, and Artificer classes along with species such as Half-Orcs, Dragonborn, Warforged, and Gnomes, players will truly be able to take any D&D character build and convert it into a Baldur's Gate 3 player character.

Baldur's Gate 3 Needs Resolutions To Each Companion's Story Arc

Every companion in Baldur's Gate 3 is defined by their struggles - both their material struggles against the brain parasites threatening to turn them into Mind Flayers, and more internal struggles between the good and bad parts of their personalities. For instance, Astarion, a Rogue and vampire-spawn, has a facade of cheerful amorality concealing a deep-seated dread and desire to be free of his former master, while Shadowheart, a half-elf Cleric of the evil goddess Shar, is torn between the cruel teachings of the cult she was raised by and her innate sense of kindness and decency. Once Larian Studios fully introduces dramatic conclusions to the story arc of each protagonist, players of Baldur's Gate 3 will be able to see how their actions and dialogue choices alter the long-term fates of their companions.

Baldur's Gate 3 Needs The Actual City Of Baldur's Gate As An Area

Baldur's Gate 3 Flaming Fist

The titular "Baldur's Gate" of the Baldur's Gate franchise is a massive city in the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons, located roughly at the heart of the Sword Coast region. In previous Baldur's Gate installments, this city was central to the game's world map and storyline, filled with multiple districts, vast underground passageways, and scheming organizations such as the Flaming Fist, Seven Suns, Thieves Guild and Iron Throne.

Most of the cinematic footage for Baldur's Gate 3 shows scenes where the city of Baldur's Gate is being attacked by the living Nautiloid skyship of the Mind Flayers or by Mind Flayers themselves. The implication here is that Larian Studios plans to make Baldur's Gate proper the setting of their final chapter - the location where the malevolence of the Mind Flayers will be confronted and the protagonists will rid themselves of the parasites infesting them or die trying.
