Baldur's Gate 3 was only just announced, but Larian Studios has wasted no time in sharing more. As part of the PC Gaming Show at E3 2019, Baldur's Gate 3 received a more comprehensive look thanks to Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke and Wizards of the Coast Creative Director Mike Mearls. Just don't ask about the release date.

When it comes to Dungeons & Dragons video games, Baldur's Gate is perhaps the most recognisable. A cornerstone of CRPG gaming, Baldur's Gate and its sequel delivered a fantastic story alongside compelling gameplay and a cast of memorable characters. The announcement of Baldur's Gate 3 still came as a surprise, with many concerned that such a title would never appear. Not only is it on the way, but it comes from Larian Studios, a developer that has received the highest of praise for titles like Divinity: Original Sin 2.

Over at the PC Gaming Show, Larian and Wizards of the Coast gave a fair few more details about the new title. Fans of the tabletop game will be interested to learn that it is based on the Fifth Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. On top of that, Larian has tried to build in creative options that players may think to use that "aren't necessarily going to be described in the book," such as utilizing parts of the scenery as makeshift weapons.

This marks a change from the original games, but one that should obviously be expected given the two decades since the first games were released. Both Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2, which are now coming to consoles, were based on the Second Edition of Dungeons & Dragons, but since then there have been an awful lot of changes. It will no doubt be interesting to see how much of a part this plays in a different feel between the titles, and how much comes down to a shift of developer to Larian Studios.

Baldur's Gate 3 is going to be set 100 years after the events of Baldur's Gate 2, leaving a sizeable gap in lore that players will need to get up to speed with. This will no doubt be fully explored in the game itself, but tabletop fans will have the option to pick up a Baldur's Gate 3 pen-and-paper prequel.

Aside from that, the most wanted detail was the release date, but Vincke would only say that the game will be out "when it's ready." However, the game will reportedly have plenty of fan favorite creatures and characters, beyond the mind flayers that are making their presence known in the game's trailer. More details are definitely needed soon, though.
