Recently, Netflix released a documentary called Bad Vegan: Fame. Fraud. Fugitives. which details the doomed relationship between Sarma Melngailis and her mysterious husband, Anthony Strangis. Melngailis, who stole money from investors in her restaurant, Pure Food & Wine (as well as many others), explains why it's her husband's fault.

Allegedly, Strangis told Melngailis that he'd make her dog immortal. He also promised her endless wealth and eternal happiness. The story is so strange that there is a wealth of truly bizarre quotes from this four-part series.

Anthony Makes His Position Clear To Sarma

"I'm Not Some F***ing Joker. I'm Not Someone To Be F***ed With."

Anthony Strangis In Handcuffs Going To Jail On Bad Vegan

As this docuseries opens, Anthony Strangis is heard on a call with Sarma. She started recording many of their conversations once she began to worry about their relationship. His rantings are convoluted and delusional, but he had Sarma completely gaslit.

What's most creepy about his lies and promises is his conviction. Yes, there are a lot of f-bombs dropped, but with great certainty that everything he says is the truth. That's the talent of a great grifter. He's convincing enough to take the successful restaurant owner for millions.

Vanity Fair Tries To Verify Who Anthony Really Is

"There's No, Like, Database Where You Can Look Up Secret Agents."

Vanity Fair Journalist Allen Salkin Being Interviewed In An Office For Bad Vegan

Allen Salkin, a journalist at Vanity Fair, wrote about the story and fills in gaps as the series progresses which helps make this a guilty pleasure documentary. Sarma says that Anthony -- who went by the name Shane Fox at the time -- had been in black ops and was still involved but he couldn't give her details.

He would disappear for days and radio silent because of his missions. Sarma believed him. And, as Salkin says in the quote, there's no real way to validate Anthony's claims. It's the perfect alibi for everything.

Will Richards Explains His Role

"I Was Involved In Making Sure Sarma Didn't Go Off The Rails."

Will Richards Reading Emails From Sarma On Bad Vegan

One person that confirmed Anthony's lies was Will Richards. He was supposedly Anthony's tech guy and would secure all of Sarma's technology for her so that she could feel safe. Unfortunately, Will lived in Europe and they could only email.

Sarma willingly gave Will all of her account information and passwords. She felt relieved. But Will seems like a strange guy even as he reads their correspondence to the camera. He's much too involved in their relationship and has too much information. Something isn't right.

Sarma Tries To Justify Her Behavior

"I Feel Like The Whole Time We Were Together, He Was Convincing Me That Nothing Was Real."

To effectively gaslight Sarma, Anthony created an imaginary system of higher beings that judged them and demanded certain challenges be completed in order to receive the benefits they could provide. Included in those benefits was eternal life for her and her dog, Leon, as well as unlimited wealth and happiness.

How she believed this seems very strange. Granted, the stereotype exists of raw food vegans believing in mysticism and pseudoscience. The only problem was that most of the 'challenges' were to transfer hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars to Anthony with no explanation.

Bonnie Gets Freaked Out

"What's The Meat Suit? What Is Happening?"

Bonnie Crocker Being Interviewed On Bad Vegan

Bonnie Crocker, a manager at Sarma's hugely successful restaurant is asked by the filmmaker what she thought about the meat suit and this quote is her response. So many people who are interviewed for the series -- one-time coworkers, associates, and family -- all seem surprised by much of the story. They seem frustrated with Sarma and the choices they made but they are very freaked out by Anthony, especially if they interacted with him directly.

The meat suit is the term Anthony used to refer to his body. He was fairly slender when he met Sarma but said he needed to gain a lot of weight to make himself unattractive for her as part of the challenges. This term seems to fit in perfectly with his imaginary theories about living forever.

Anthony's Ex-Wife Explains Her Fear Of Him

"He Said, 'Did You Know You Can Kill A Baby By Giving Them Salt And It Doesn't Show Up In An Autopsy?' I Never Left Riley Alone With Him Ever."

Stacy Strangis, Anthony's Ex, Being Interviewed For Bad Vegan

Partway through the series, the bomb is dropped by Nazim Seliakhov (Anthony's supposed righthand man) that Anthony had been married before and had a child named Riley. Stacy Strangis explains her relationship with Anthony, how much she loved him and trusted him even though he and his father pawned her jewelry and fought and Anthony made wild statements like this quote.

He said they were going to inherit millions of dollars that never appeared and he refused to get a job. Then suddenly he disappeared on her and didn't reappear until he was in the news and on the lamb. It's revealed that Anthony's big secret is that he's a gambling addict and that's why he's scamming Sarma for so much money like The Tinder Swindler.

Naz Reflects On Sarma's Solo Trip To Rome

"She Actually Felt Like She Was Going For A Mission. Mission Impossible. It Was Just A Lie, Another Lie."

Nazim Seliakhov Being Interviewed In A Dark Bar For Bad Vegan

As things start to fall apart for Anthony and Sarma is running her restaurant into the ground, Anthony tells his wife she needs to fly to Rome as one of her challenges and wait for further instruction. She goes and waits. Anthony's promised that she's so close to achieving her goals.

But nothing happens. There are a lot of photos on social media that Sarma posts, making her staff and investors think she's spending all of their earnings and not paying any of them. This quote is a reaffirmation that Anthony was getting desperate and Sarma was too deep in to see reality.

Sarma's Dad Talks To Anthony

"What Do You Mean We're Family? I Don't Even Know Your Last Name."

John Melngailis Being Interviewed In A Green Room For Bad Vegan

Once the restaurant staff has walked out and Sarma has no more access to income, Anthony takes her on a road trip that she seems to misunderstand. They are on the lamb together. Anthony has access to all of Sarma's contacts and he starts to reach out to her family for money.

When he contacts Sarma's dad, Anthony tries to remind John that they're family. Sarma's dad responds with this quote, so telling about the disconnection Sarma has created between her and her loved ones. Unfortunately, his scam works on Sarma's mother and he's able to continue gambling.

Sarma Finds Out That Anthony Faked The Tech Guy

"There Was No Will. It Was Just Another Email Account That He Made."

2 Pics: Anthony Strangis' Mugshot And Will Richards In Bad Vegan

Once Anthony and Sarma get caught in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee with the infamous Domino's pizza order, they're sent to Rikers Island and the legal proceedings begin. As everything begins to unravel and much of the truth comes out, including this mind-blowing quote from Sarma when she found out that Will Richards the tech guy never existed.

Anthony had made him up to get all of Sarma's information and to "make sure Sarma didn't go off the rails." He was her hero, her Thor. He felt like he was caring for her, protecting her from imaginary evil. Or he was making it all up, just like Will.

Sarma Still Talks To Anthony

"You Realize You Have To Step Out Of The Meat Suit And Appear On A Unicorn."

Sarma Wearing Sunglasses And Walking In A Crowd On Bad Vegan

Dubbed "The Vegan Bernie Maddoff" by the press, the public loved to vilify Sarma. People loved the story that the vegan queen had been taken down by a pizza. This documentary, told from her perspective, seems to want to justify her actions until the very end when they play phone calls between the two.

After everything that has happened, Anthony seems to be trying to rope Sarma back in, and quite surprisingly she responds with this quote. Is she flirting with him? Is she still under his spell even after all that's happened? Viewers are left wondering what will happen next.
