Despite his co-star's ongoing controversy, Bad Boys 4 has gotten a confident update from star Martin Lawrence. The action-comedy franchise kicked off with 1995's Bad Boys, in which Lawrence starred as Miami Police Detective Marcus Burnett, the more reserved family man to Will Smith's adrenaline-fueled Mike Lowrey. Lawrence and Smith have led all three Bad Boys films, which were primarily helmed by Michael Bay and created by screenwriter George Gallo.

The duo recently returned for 2020's Bad Boys for Life, helmed by future Moon Knight and Batgirl duo Adil & Bilall, and saw Mike and Marcus investigating a string of murders with potential ties to Mike's undercover past. Unlike the first two films, Bad Boys for Life scored positive reviews from critics and grossed over $426 million against its $90 million production budget, becoming the third highest-grossing January release of all time and highest-grossing film in the franchise. With this success, Sony got to work on Bad Boys 4 and after two years of mostly radio silence, one star has a promising update for the sequel.

In a recent interview with Ebony, Martin Lawrence was asked for an update regarding Bad Boys 4. The franchise star was asked whether Will Smith's recent controversy at the Oscars, in which he slapped Chris Rock after a joke made regarding Jada Pinkett Smith, had affected development on the sequel. Lawrence remained confident in the film's chances, saying that "We got one more at least."

Bad Boys For Life Martin Lawrence and Will Smith

Following Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, reports began to surface that Bad Boys 4 had been put on hold at Sony, alongside a number of other major projects the Oscar winner was attached to star in. Despite these reports, Sony Chairman Tom Rothman confirmed this past May that Bad Boys 4 was still in the works at the studio, stating that "there weren't any brakes to pump" as the project had yet to gain any proper steam. While Lawrence may not have offered much in the way of how much progress had been made on the film, his confidence in Bad Boys 4 is sure to come as welcome news for fans of the franchise.

Despite the 17-year gap between sequels, Bad Boys for Life truly took critics and audiences by surprise and have left many excited about what Bad Boys 4 could deliver, namely as threequel writer Chris Bremner had been tapped to return to write the script for the sequel. Given the third film took so long to get off the ground and proved worth the wait, it will be interesting to see how long it takes Sony to crack to code for Bad Boys 4 to deliver another exciting installment in the franchise, namely as the studio continues to expand its Spider-Man Universe and Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequels. While audiences await further details on Bad Boys 4, they can revisit the surprise hit Bad Boys for Life streaming on Fubo now.
