Just over a month after getting an update from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Bad Boys 4 has officially been confirmed by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The buddy cop franchise stars Smith and Lawrence as Miami Police Detective Lieutenants Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett as they investigate a variety of high-stakes drug networks running through their town, along with their own dysfunctional partnership. Produced by Bruckheimer, the Bad Boys franchise has been a fan-favorite across all three films, with the long-awaited threequel Bad Boys For Life actually scoring the best reviews yet for the series and its highest-grossing at over $426 million grossed against its $90 million production budget.

After two years of teasing the two would reunite, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have taken to their Instagrams to confirm Bad Boys 4 is officially happening.

The duo announced the sequel in a video shot by Smith in which he excitedly travels to Lawrence's house, hinting at the announcement to come by playing Murphy Lee's "Shake Ya Tailfeather" track made popular by Bad Boys 2. Smith and Lawrence proceed to have a humorous interaction of struggling to land on a title for the fourth movie, realizing they incidentally used up the perfect title with the third film, Bad Boys For Life.

Though development on the film has been underway since the third's successful box office opening, Bad Boys 4 was left in doubt following Smith's infamous Oscars slap, with some reports indicating the project had been put on hold due to it. Sony chairman Tom Rothman did later debunk these reports, assuring that development was still ongoing and recounting his own relationship with Smith in the past, feeling his apology and regrets for slapping Chris Rock to be genuine. Lawrence also expressed confidence in Bad Boys 4 moving forward shortly thereafter, feeling that he and Smith had at least one more movie in them for the franchise.

The confirmation that Bad Boys 4 is moving forward does mark a promising sign for Smith's post-Oscars-slap career, something that was left largely in doubt. After seeing multiple projects scrapped, Smith did garner critical acclaim for his performance in the Antoine Fuqua-helmed slavery drama Emancipation, creating plenty of Oscar buzz, only for him to be left without a nomination during the recent awards announcements. Though landing a role in the sci-fi thriller Brilliance, which is being helmed by Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Bad Boys 4 progressing does confidence from a major studio to have Smith lead a blockbuster-scale production.
