Disney+ has announced the official release date for Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2. The animated series was created by Star Wars stalwart Davie Filoni and launched on the streaming service on May 4, 2021. It is both a sequel and a spinoff to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the long-running series that Filoni also participated in. Season 1 run ran for 16 episodes through August 13, but the series was already renewed for season 2 earlier that month before the two-part finale.
The Bad Batch follows the titular group of clone troopers, all voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. Also known as Clone Force 99, they go on death-defying mercenary missions after the conclusion of the Clone Wars. The series follows their escapades after being joined by new Clone Omega, played by Michelle Ang. Although Baker and Ang are the only two main cast members, the series also includes the voices of Ben Diskin, Bob Bergen, Gwendoline Yeo, Noshir Dalal, Rhea Perlman, Liam O'Brien, and Sam Riegel, among others.
Disney hasn't been skimping on its Star Wars announcements even after the glut of news that came from last week's Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California. Just 5 days after the trailer for The Bad Batch season 2 was released, they announced the release date in a banner ad on the Disney+ home page. The ad, which features the characters looking out over a brand new sci-fi landscape, bears the slogan "Season 2 coming September 28."
The main storyline for The Bad Batch season 2 is still unclear for the moment. However, the trailer revealed that several characters from the Star Wars universe will be returning in the new slate of episodes, including the notorious Emperor Palpatine and Commander Cody, who was previously portrayed by The Book of Boba Fett star Temuera Morrison in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 2005. Another memorable moment from the trailer introduces a Wookiee Jedi to the mix.
One thing that has been confirmed is the fact that Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 will not be set directly after the events of the season 1 finale. In that episode, the crew witnessed the destruction of Kamino's Tipoca City, but the show's composers the Kiner Brothers let it slip that Omega is older in this season, indicating a significant time jump. Disney has several other Star Wars projects to promote between now and September, including the final three episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi and the premiere of the Rogue One spinoff Andor, so it is unlikely that much more information about The Bad Batch will be shared until much closer to the release date.
