Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2 will see the return of a previously assumed dead Jedi, which continues Star Wars’ Order 66 retcon. While live-action shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and The Book of Boba Fett are becoming the new norm for the saga, animated shows are still an important part of the Star Wars canon. The Bad Batch season 2 continues that tradition by adding more context regarding the early months of the Empire, including an insight into the status of characters audiences had already seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

While brief, the first Bad Batch season 2 trailer revealed some of the elements the show will tackle when it returns in Fall 2022. The Bad Batch clones all have updated suits, Commander Cody returns, and Palpatine himself will show up during a scene at the Imperial Senate. Curiously, one of the most exciting parts of the Bad Batch season 2 trailer did not involve either the clones or Palpatine but rather the return of Gungi: a character that had been introduced during Clone Wars.

Gungi was a Jedi padawan during the Clone Wars, and like many others of that era, he was assumed to have died after Order 66. However, the Bad Batch season 2 trailer reveals that not only Gungi is alive, but he is also using his Jedi training and his Kashyyyk-made lightsaber. Gungi’s return makes for yet another addition on the list of Jedi who survived Order 66 in canon – one that keeps getting bigger with almost every new Star Wars content. For example, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s episode 1 introduced Nari, a surviving Jedi that was hiding in Tatooine. Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars: Rebels, Cal Kestis in Jedi: Fallen Order, Grogu in The Mandalorian, and every Inquisitor in the Star Wars canon are some of the other examples. By having so many surviving Jedi being part of important stories set during the Galactic Civil War and beyond, Star Wars risks diminishing the importance of both Order 66 and Luke’s original trilogy story.

Order 66 was supposed to mark the end of the Jedi until Luke could finally answer the hero’s call and save Darth Vader/Anakin in Return of the Jedi. However, almost paradoxically, Order 66 became the source for some of the most crucial Star Wars stories released during the Disney era. There is a lot of potential for new Jedi characters in Luke Skywalker’s Jedi academy or in anything set after the sequel trilogy. Yet, Star Wars keeps focusing its efforts on Order 66’s survivors. That recurring retcon also creates a narrative challenge, as audiences know that most of those Jedi will either die or renounce their title before The Empire Strikes Back, in which Yoda claims Luke will soon become the last Jedi.

Jedi and other Force users will always be the main selling point of Star Wars, but that should not mean that Order 66 should lose all its value. There are plenty of other eras in the Star Wars canon in which there could be from dozens to thousands of Jedi, and thus is not necessary for so many Order 66 Jedi survivors to exist in canon. With Andor and The Bad Batch season 2, all set in that era, coming up after Obi-Wan Kenobi, it will be interesting to see if there will be other Jedi reveals other than Gungi.
