There Won't Be Another Back To The Future Says Robert Zemeckis

After comments from Christopher Lloyd sparked speculation over a new Back to the Future movie, director Robert Zemeckis was quick to nix the idea.

Back To The Future director Robert Zemeckis has dispelled any notion of a fourth entry in the iconic movie franchise which starred Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown. Written by Zemeckis alongside producer Bob Gale, the Back To The Future trilogy is widely regarded as a classic of the era and retains a large and dedicated fan base to this day. As such, there have been calls for a fourth installment ever since the release of Back To The Future Part III in 1990, however Zemeckis and Gale have always strongly resisted the idea.

Those Back To The Future Part IV rumors were resurrected recently due to comments from the Doc himself, Christopher Lloyd. The legendary actor stated during a Q&A session that he would love to take part in a fourth movie, so long as the story was right and lived up to the previous three films. Although Lloyd didn't suggest that any official talks had taken place regarding Part IV, this was enough to reignite calls for another adventure starring Marty McFly and Doc Brown.

However, Robert Zemeckis has been swift to once again clarify that he has no intention of making another Back To The Future film. Speaking with Italian outlet Bad Taste, the director unequivocally reiterated: "There will not be any more Back To The Future."

While some fans may be disappointed that there won't be another Back To The Future, many more will recognize that this is probably for the best. The Back To The Future trilogy is a rare gem in that the two sequels are more or less on par with the 1985 original. To risk tarnishing that legacy decades later would surely be little more than an exercise in nostalgia. Additionally, as Bob Gale has pointed out in the past, there are issues to consider in terms of the cast. Not only are the leading duo of Fox and Lloyd both a great deal older now, but Fox's Parkinson's disease has unfortunately limited the amount of work the actor can take on.

However, this doesn't necessarily mean that Back To The Future IV is out of the question forever. Robert Zemeckis has previously claimed that while he and Bob Gale will refuse another installment while either man is still alive, the matter could be taken out of their hands once both have passed away. This would leave the estates of Zemeckis and Gale to battle it out against Universal Pictures, with the potential financial gain of a new Back To The Future movie likely too huge for the studio to ignore.
