The Bachelorette star Hannah Brown has found herself facing severe backlash after posting an Instagram live video where the starlet uses the N-word while rapping in front of millions of followers. She's gotten a lot of backlash from Bachelor Nation, including her ex-flame Tyler Cameron.
Hannah Brown, or “Alabama Hannah” as she’s nicknamed, has found a way to maintain relevance long after her season of The Bachelorette, which ended in the former pageant queen being single with a hefty Instagram following. Since then, she has won Dancing with the Stars, and most recently she has made headlines for quarantining with a runner-up on her season Tyler Cameron. The runner up is known for speaking his opinions, whether they are popular or not.
Hannah was seen laughing her way through the backlash after making a verbal apology during her video. She has since issued a more serious written apology, which sparked former Bachelorette alum Rachel Lindsay to respond on her personal Instagram, writing, “You know, it’s easy to make a statement. It’s easy to hide behind [written] words, but when you’re bold enough to say the N-word on camera, on your platform. Let me just say, when you’re bold enough to say the word on your platform, then you need to be bold enough to use your face on camera and apologize the same way you said the word.”
This was the first sound-off commenting on Hannah’s poor taste and was followed up by the star’s ex-fling Tyler, who soon re-posted Lindsay’s video calling Hannah to action and added, “Rachel hit the nail on the head. Y'all need to look at the comments. We have a long ways to go on this issue and a lot to learn. If you find yourself getting defensive, you are part of the problem.” Tyler had some mixed commentary from his followers, as some of Hannah Brown’s defenders accused the 27-year-old of “going against” his former flame. To this, his response was calling for those with a large platform to use it to educate others instead of being a part of the bigger societal problem, check out the full Instagram post below (via @everythingtylercameron):
Cameron posted on his Instagram story, “Those that say that it's part of the song and that they can sing it are so out of touch. HB is not a racist. I know. But blaming the rap artist is not the answer. Educate yourself and listen to what Rachel has to say about the word Bitch and hopefully it'll start to click for you.” He goes on to say that this is an opportunity for all involved, “We need to lift HB up from this. She is learning and growing just like every single one of us. Love rids hate. Hate only makes more hate. Let's learn and lift each other up with love.”
Tyler made it a point to neither alienate nor encourage Hannah Brown’s behavior, but rather used it as an opportunity to reach a broader audience on the issue at hand. Although Bachelor Nation has seen its fair share of controversy, it is necessary for the stars to have awareness of their platform and take responsibility for their actions. Tyler has been a source of even-tempered critique and has shown that this is beyond Hannah Brown’s mistake, opening up his own platform for discussion on the broader societal issue.
