Former Bachelor Colton Underwood has come out as gay, and now, former Survivor winner Richard Hatch is commenting on the move. The responses from Bachelor Nation have been overwhelmingly positive. This includes former host Chris Harrison, who congratulated Colton on social media. Stars from other reality TV shows are commenting about the bombshell news as well, including Richard.

The controversial contestant took to Twitter, addressing the self-loathing Colton discussed in his interview on Good Morning America. The former football player admitted to interviewer Robin Roberts that he struggled with self-hatred for a long time. At one point, he even contemplated suicide. Richard put the blame for those feelings on Colton's religious upbringing.

Replying to a tweet from Bravo's Andy Cohen, the original Survivor winner wrote, "The origins of Colton’s (& many/most LGBTQ folks’) self-loathing stem from ignorant, misguided societal messaging. If you & your religion espouse beliefs about people being unworthy, inferior, or even hated because of their inherent sexuality (or race), you are culpably moronic." When another Twitter user replied in agreement, stating that's a reason why they're a lapsed Catholic, Richard continued, "Many religions ostensibly espouse many healthy tenets and do good works. Unfortunately, when the underlying philosophies are imaginary, followers are prone to subjectively manipulating those philosophies to fulfill their own agendas."

Colton's Christianity was a major part of his Bachelor season. At the time, it seemed to be the reason he was, famously, the "Virgin Bachelor." Though Colton is now working through that self-loathing, claiming he's the "happiest and healthiest I've ever been in my life," many other LGBTQ+ individuals raised in religious communities haven't been as lucky.

Richard, who was married to Emiliano Cabral from 2005-2017, is also openly gay. That's not the only thing these reality stars share. Like Colton, he has also had some legal trouble. In 2006, he was charged with tax evasion, serving 51 months in prison. Last year, Colton was accused of stalking his ex Cassie Randolph. She filed a restraining order against him, alleging he sent harassing texts and put a tracking device on her car. Colton acknowledged that as an especially dark time in the interview. While the 29-year-old did apologize, he didn't directly address those charges.

Though Richard didn't return for Survivor's Winners at War 20th anniversary season, he has continued a reality TV career, appearing on shows such as The Biggest Loser. Colton is also returning to TV with his own Netflix series. Bachelor fans will surely tune in to see the next steps of his journey from self-loathing to acceptance.
