The upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog movie has just unveiled an infant version of the title character, and he might give the popular Baby Yoda a run for his money. This new look at the hyperactive hedgehog hero was shown off in a Japanese trailer, providing a possible glimpse at the backstory of Sega’s iconic mascot.

The Sonic movie has had a rollercoaster of a year in 2019, with its initial trailer prompting a massive backlash regarding the film’s take on the title character – namely his freakish, humanlike teeth and bizarrely skinny frame. This led to a drastic redesign and delay, which thankfully gained the movie praise for Sonic’s more faithful look. The film will tell the story of how Sonic first came into the human world and will show him teaming up with a sheriff named Tom Wachowski (played by James Marsden) against Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik.

A new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released in Japan on Thursday, showing a young Sonic running through the fabled Green Hill Zone of the original game in order to give a flower to someone. In addition, a poster of Baby Sonic, still clad in his trademark red shoes and white gloves and holding the same flower, can be seen below:

Meanwhile, Star Wars fans have been awestruck by an unnamed infant member of Jedi Master Yoda’s species. First revealed in the premiere episode of Disney Plus’s exclusive show The Mandalorian, “Baby Yoda” took the internet by storm in November, spawning countless memes and speculation regarding his origin and role in the larger Star Wars galaxy. Disney was unprepared for the little one’s level of popularity, prompting them to fast-track merchandise of the character for release next year.

Only time will tell if Baby Sonic can beat Baby Yoda for the title of Most Popular Baby of the New Decade, but the little blue hedgehog is certainly on the right track. Sonic was already an endearing video game icon, but this new younger look manages to make him even more adorable. We still don’t know who the flower he’s holding is for (possibly his mother, unless Paramount is adapting his Uncle Chuck from 90’s Sonic The Hedgehog animated series), but fans will see more of the young Blue Blur when Sonic The Hedgehog hits theaters on February 14th next year.
