During the recent Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft unveiled a wide variety of fantastic titles that has fans excited to see on the Xbox Series X, and among them was Avowed, developed by the legendary studio Obsidian Entertainment. The studio responsible for hit titles such Fallout: New Vegas and The Outer Worlds is bringing a new fantasy RPG title to the Xbox lineup. However, many PlayStation fans are wondering whether Avowed will ever be making it onto the PS5.

Avowed is set in the world of Eora, a setting first introduced in Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity which released back in 2015. Unlike Pillars of Eternity, Avowed will be stepping away from the isometric RPG genre and replacing it with first person gameplay with a strong resemblance to Skyrim's systems. While not too much is currently known about Avowed, the trailer definitely has players curious about what the upcoming title will offer.

Unfortunately, it seems that PlayStation fans will likely have to miss out on Avowed. While the game was only announced recently, its very improbable that the title will be able to be played on anything that's not Xbox or PC. Since Avowed has been advertised as an Xbox exclusive and Obsidian was acquired by Microsoft back in 2018, the fantasy RPG will likely not be getting a port onto any of Sony's consoles. However, there is a possibility that the game may launch on Xbox One. While this is unclear, Microsoft is pushing for integration and backwards compatibility, even with some of its newest titles, so Xbox One fans may get the chance to play Avowed for themselves.

Why PS5 Owners Probably Won't Get Avowed

Avowed

Obsidian Entertainment's other two titles, Grounded and The Outer Worlds, were also both produced during the Microsoft acquisition. However, The Outer Worlds was available on PS4. The reason this was possible was that Obsidian and their publisher, Private Division, had begun work on the game prior to Microsoft purchasing the company. This created a type of loophole which allowed for the title to release on platforms that extended beyond Xbox and PC. Seeing as Avowed has been getting produced entirely under the ownership of Microsoft, the aforementioned loophole does not exist. In turn, it's highly unlikely that Avowed will be released onto any PlayStation system.

At this time, there is no release date for Avowed. Given that the title was just announced and it's unclear how far into development the game is, its possible Avowed may release sometime closer to 2022. Nevertheless, Avowed will be Obsidian Entertainment's first Microsoft exclusive title. Sony had an amazing array of exclusives last year, including Marvel's Spider-Man and the recent Ghost of Tsushima, so it seems Microsoft is stepping up its game with its continued acquisition of renowned developers.

While this news is unfortunate for PlayStation fans, there are a lot of exciting games coming up for the PS5. Sony recently unveiled plenty of fantastic titles for their next-gen console, so PlayStation owners will still have much to enjoy, even if Avowed isn't available to them. It will be interesting to see how Obsidian's upcoming title evolves over the next few months or years of development, and players should expect more details about the game's mechanics and story sometime soon.
