Here's who the original Avengers could see in the Soul World in Avengers: Endgame. Joe and Anthony Russo's 2018 film, Avengers: Infinity War, introduced fans to the orange-tinged world where Thanos (Josh Brolin) was transported after the snap. There, he meets a young Gamora (Ariana Greenblatt) who asks him what it took for him to accomplish his mission to balance the universe. Since then, the location had become a point of conversation among fans.

It's actually unclear where or what the place is; it's not officially called the Soul World, but while working on Infinity War, the filmmakers simply referred to it as "the waystation." The only reason behind its unofficial name is because it resembles the Soul World from the comic books. Nevertheless, it's essentially a place of introspection, allowing them to look back at their lives and the major events that shaped it. Endgame attempted to feature the dimension again featuring Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in the aftermath of his snap which effectively killed him. He meets his grown-up daughter, Morgan (Katherine Langford) and they briefly talked about the hero's death. Unfortunately, the scene didn't resonate with viewers during test screenings so director Joe and Anthony Russo decided to scrap it.

Conversations about who may have wielded the power of all six Infinity Stones to defeat Thanos instead of Tony are still ongoing, and since Endgame functioned as the final hurrah for the original Avengers, if anyone else was to do it, chances are that it would be any one of them. Considering that the appearance of the Soul World is linked to the snap, there's also fascination as to who those other heroes could meet in the mysterious dimension if they were the ones to click their fingers. Here are some viable options.

Iron Man

Iron Man snaps his fingers wearing his version of the Infinity Gauntlet in Avengers: Endgame

In some ways, Iron Man's arc parallels Thanos's in the MCU, so it makes sense that the Russos wanted Tony Stark to meet his daughter in the Soul World as the Mad Titan did. The problem here is fans do not have enough emotional investment in adult Morgan Stark for the Avengers: Endgame scene to work. That said, Marvel Studios could've gotten away with the scene without totally scrapping it if they only had Tony reunite with someone else in the Soul World — Ho Yinsen (Shaun Toub). The genius, billionaire owed his life to the brilliant surgeon who kept him alive and helped him survive his kidnapping in Iron Man. Tony's encounter with him, arguably more than being abducted, was the catalyst for him to assume his superhero persona and do something worthwhile with his life. Seeing them come together after 10 years and a total character haul for Tony would be a great way to bookend not just Iron Man's story, but the Infinity Saga's narrative as well. Unlike adult Morgan, Yinsen reuniting with Tony would also effectively evoke the reaction the Russos wanted since long-time fans know who he is.

Captain America

Captain America holds Thor's hammer in Avengers Endgame

Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) got a happy ending in Avengers: Endgame; after devoting most of his life serving his purpose as Captain America, he finally got to live the life he always wanted with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). That said, it goes without saying that if he had the chance to do the snap in the film to take down Thanos, he would've taken the opportunity just like Tony Stark did. Assuming that this was the case, there's only really one person that Steve will see in the Soul World — Peggy. Throughout his arc in the MCU, Peggy remained to be Steve's compass; he remained loyal to her, and while he did try to move on with her niece in Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), he ultimately returned to his one true love. Had Captain America wielded the power of the Infinity Stones, chances are that he would've also died, meaning he wouldn't have had the chance to live a life with Peggy like what happened in Endgame. That said, a conversation between the star-crossed lovers could help him come to terms with the tragedy of not having the opportunity to be with her.

Thor

Avengers Endgame Thor Stormbreaker Mjolnir Chris Hemsworth

Following the string of personal tragedies that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) experienced until Avengers: Endgame, the God of Thunder was severely depressed when the team reconvened five years later for the time heist. Towards the end of the film, however, once he recognized the task at hand with 2014 Thanos making an appearance, he geared up for battle and gave it everything to make sure that the Mad Titan never wreaks havoc again as he did in Avengers: Infinity War. Since Thor is a demi-god, chances are that he would've survived doing the snap — that doesn't mean, however, that he wouldn't have found himself in the Soul World just like Thanos did in Infinity War. Thor could see a few people in the dimension like his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and mother, Frigga (Rene Russo) — but, he was already able to bid them goodbye separately in Thor: Ragnarok and earlier in Endgame. That makes Loki (Tom Hiddleston) the best candidate for him to have a brief conversation in the Soul World. The brothers have had a complicated dynamic growing up, and unfortunately, by the time they genuinely were starting to see eye-to-eye, Loki was killed by Thanos. This would give them a chance for a proper goodbye, and while the God of Mischief was typically a source of grief for Thor, a heartfelt conversation between the pair would be a great way to move his arc forward, not to mention have the viewers emotional for their final encounter.

Hulk

Hulk snaps the Infinity Stones in Avengers Endgame

Before Avengers: Endgame's final battle, Smart Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) successfully snapped all those who perished from Avengers: Infinity War back to life. Unlike Thanos and even Iron Man, however, there was no planned Soul World trip for him, although the film's writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that they thought of featuring Hulk having a conversation with either Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johannson) or Bruce Banner for his version of the sequence.

It's understandable why Hulk didn't get his time in the Soul World considering what came immediately after his snap, but if Endgame had the time for it, he should've seen Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) instead, allowing Banner to reconcile with the life he didn't have the chance to live with her. While The Incredible Hulk is deemed canon in the MCU, Marvel Studios has yet to address the love affair between Banner and Ross in succeeding films. This would've been a great way to finally do that. Otherwise, it would've been interesting to see a conversation between Banner and Hulk in which they discuss whether the decision to meld the two personas to become Smart Hulk was good or not.

Black Widow

Black Widow's death on Vormir in Avengers Endgame

Natasha Romanoff didn't even get the chance to partake in Avengers: Endgame's final battle against Thanos and his minions as the hero died to acquire the Soul Stone during the time heist. This remains to be a controversial creative decision for Marvel Studios, and there's hope that they can somehow justify this in Cate Shortland's Black Widow film. The movie will introduce fans to Natasha's first family and will delve into her past before she joined SHIELD and eventually became an Avenger. If she had the chance to snap at the end of Endgame and be transported to the Soul World, it would have offered an opportunity for her to see her parents, particularly her dad, whom she claims she never knew. This could be an effective lead-in to Black Widow if the prequel film will tackle her full history. It was also possible for her to see any of her family members who will be properly introduced in MCU's Phase 4 inaugural movie, which again, would function as a good set-up for the blockbuster.

Hawkeye

Ronin closeup in Avengers Endgame

During his intense scuffle with Black Widow in Vormir regarding who gets to sacrifice their life for the Soul Stone, there were certain points that made it look like Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) was going to be the one to die. Aside from getting ahead of Natasha Romanoff a few times, dying for a noble cause would also be an effective way to redeem himself after his run as the ruthless assassin Ronin. However, the Avengers: Endgame filmmakers had other plans, and the character survived the ordeal and reunited with his family at the end of the movie. If Clint Barton had the chance to do the snap to defeat Thanos, however, he would undoubtedly see Natasha in the Soul World. This would give them the opportunity for a final conversation as they look back on their stints as Avengers — perhaps they can even mention Budapest and what exactly happened during that mysterious incident.
