Warning! Spoilers for Defenders: Beyond #1 by Marvel Comics

Marvel's Defenders are taking on a threat that even Eternity admits "is not a job for the Avengers," as the newly formed team is going after the Secret Wars villain, the Beyonder. In Defenders: Beyond #1 by Marvel Comics, the Defenders are sent on a mission outside space and time. Unbeknownst to them, they're about to collide with the reality-shaping villain, who will play a massive role in the current miniseries.

The Beyonder is a classic Marvel villain, debuting in the original Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #1, where the cosmic being reshaped the Marvel Universe and created Battleword. The Beyonder and his alien race, the Beyonders, played also played a key role in Jonathan Hickman, Esad Ribic, and Ive Scorcina's Secret Wars, where the villain was asked to help remake the Multiverse after incursions left it fractured. The Beyonders' powers would be given to Doctor Doom and, soon after, Mr. Fantastic, which led to the eventual destruction of the forged world. The later run is being adapted in the newest Avengers film, Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled to be released on 2025.

In Defenders: Beyond #1 by Al Ewing, Javier Rodriguez, and VC's Joe Caramagna from Marvel Comics, Doctor Strange calls on Blue Marvel to lead a new Defenders team, as he's joined by Loki, America Chavez, Taaia, and Tigra. The group is sent sprawling across the edge of time, where the powerful cosmic being, Eternity meets them. The living embodiment of the universe warns the Defenders that he's opening the space outside his own being. Blue Marvel admits that the warning from Eternity shows "this is not a job for the Avengers." The heroes are sent through the darkness, but when they emerge, they come face to face with the Secret Wars villain Beyonder.

Defenders Beyonder

The Defenders encounter the Beyonder, as Blue Marvel admits the team is in "deep trouble." The tease for the next issue asks, "whatever happened to the Second Cosmos?" as the team is heading to the time of the first Multiverse, as they will cross paths with the Secret Wars villain who has previously dismantled the Avengers.

The Beyonder's sudden emergence understandably worries the team, as questions remain about the recent whereabouts of the reality-shaping foe and what version of the villain they will face. As Blue Marvel mentioned, the Defenders' mission is far too grand and cosmic for the Avengers and some of the other mightiest heroes on Earth, so defeating him won't be easy. Nevertheless, the newly formed team will fight to figure out what the Beyonder wants and whether they can team up to take on the Secret Wars villain.
