If Kang The Conqueror is to be the villain of Avengers: Secret Wars, many things will be different from the original story, namely the setting. Secret Wars is one of Marvel's many important comic book events, as it brings a plethora of heroes and villains together in one place in order to tell a fantastic story. However, it is rather evident that many things in the Marvel Cinematic Universe version need to be changed considering that Kang is being set up in the MCU to be the film's ultimate villain, one place in particular being exactly where the event takes place.

The initial concept of Secret Wars is rather fascinating. A cosmic entity, simply known as the Beyonder, transports a select group of superheroes and villains from Earth in order to compete against each other in a challenge of his own design for his own amusement. Whichever side is deemed as victorious will be granted anything that they desire, which was a very possible thing that an all-powerful being like the Beyonder could do. Not only do the heroes and villains have to fight amongst themselves in an intensely high-stakes scenario, but they also must find a way to survive the Beyonder's competition and somehow get back home to Earth.

Secret Wars is a well-regarded story. However, as many MCU fans have come to realize, Marvel likes to change certain details as a means of better adapting the narrative to the big screen, as well as better fitting it to the overall tone/theme of the film universe itself. Because of this, several other major Marvel events have been significantly changed when they were brought into the MCU, an example of this being Captain America: Civil War and its astounding differences compared to its source material. It will be incredibly likely that Secret Wars will follow that same path and have many changes made to it in terms of its characters and, more importantly, its location.

How Avengers 6 Will Be Different From Marvel's Secret Wars Comics

It has become rather clear that one major difference between the original story and the film is the change of its character roster. There are several heroes in the MCU's New Avengers lineup whose comic book counterparts were not on the list of chosen warrior, such as the new Black Panther (whomever he/she may be), Shang-Chi, and Ms. Marvel, not to mention members of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, who have yet to be introduced into the MCU. There are quite a few villains that do not make the cut either. However the biggest character change has to do with the mastermind behind the entire Secret Wars arc. Rather than having the cosmic Beyonder entity be the cause of the overall event, it is strongly speculated that, due to the fact that Phases 4 through 6 are focused on time travel and the Multiverse, Kang the Conqueror will instead be the one to fill the role. While this is a significant change in and of itself, it also merits many other alterations to the plot. The most notable example of such a revision would be a change of scenery that would better align with Kang and his character, as opposed to the original comic location: the Beyonder's Battleworld.

Battleworld Explained & Why It Can't Be Used In Avengers 6

An image of Marvel's heroes assembled on Battleworld in Secret Wars.

Up until Secret Wars took place in the comics, Battleworld did not initially exist. Moments after the Beyonder whisked his chosen heroes and villains to deep space, he used his magnificent cosmic powers to create an arena before their very eyes; a planet on which they will compete in his grand tournament. In order to create a planet with an environment that would allow his champions to use their powers to their fullest potential, the Beyonder decided that the best way to create a new planet is by using pieces of other planets, regardless of whether said planets are inhabited. Needless to say, thanks to the Beyonder's efforts, his contenders were not the only ones that ended up on Battleworld.

While the concept of a planet made of planets is truly a fascinating idea, in terms of adapting Secret Wars to the MCU, it does not seem to be the best fit, especially since the Beyonder is confirmed to not be present in the new story. Not only that, but it would also not fit with the Multiverse, the main concept that the MCU is currently focusing on, meaning that the entire event is to take place more in time rather than in space. As Kang is being set up as the film's primary antagonist, it would be better and more logical to have a fighting environment in a place or area that has more to do with him and his character, namely his home base.

Will Chronopolis Replace Battleworld In Avengers: Secret Wars?

Marvel Comic Chronopolis Kang City

Kang's base of operations is just as fascinating as Battleworld. His headquarters is a city called Chronopolis, a place over which he reigns that is located in an alternate dimension known as Limbo. One might think that a simple city is not as impressive as a planet made with chunks of other planets, but the entire idea of this place is a full representation of Kang and the threat that he poses to the Marvel Universe. As his title suggests, Kang is a conqueror, a ruler that takes control of places and peoples, usually by force. However, as a time traveler, Kang does things a bit differently. He essentially takes a small site on Earth and adds it to Chronopolis as a means of expanding. Every single sector/borough of Kang's city is a place that has displaced from its own time period, whether it be ancient, modern, or futuristic. If there must be an arena in which the MCU's Secret Wars must take place, Chronopolis would surely be the most likely candidate for the event's setting, especially with Kang being the villain.

Could Secret Wars Take Place In The Quantum Realm?

The idea of time travel and the Multiverse was first introduced in Avengers: Endgame when Scott Lang discovered the temporal-distorting abilities of the Quantum Realm, a microscopic, timeless dimension that can be accessed through use of magic or Pym Particles. Using the abilities of the Quantum Realm, the Avengers were able to travel through time and steal past versions of the Infinity Stones in an operation known as the Time Heist. It is most likely that the Multiverse is based entirely around the Quantum Realm, as it is most likely used whenever a new portal is created or accessed. However, a pivotal scene in Ant-Man and the Wasp has created a new fan theory that definitely should not be ignored.

In Ant-Man and the Wasp, during the scene in which Hank Pym travels into the Quantum Realm in order to save his wife Janet, his ship passes by what looks to be a city encased in a bubble or barrier. This has garnered many theories as to what the city actually is. Some believe that it is the headquarters of the TVA from Loki, but others think that this city just so happens to be none other than Kang's Chronopolis. If the latter is true, then that Secret Wars will happen in the Quantum Realm proper. This idea is certainly eye-opening, however audiences will not know for sure if it is true until more content is released. Until more information is given, only time will tell.
