Warning! Spoilers for Dark Ages #1 below

Marvel's most powerful heroes - including Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch - just took on one of the most terrifying villains they've ever faced and lost. In the new Dark Ages limited series by Marvel Comics, the Unmaker awoke after billions of years, and when they tried to destroy Earth, powerful heroes assembled to thwart its efforts. Unfortunately, while the Avengers and other heroes successfully stopped the Unmaker, the fight ended up being a massacre.

Marvel's Dark Ages #1 sees a new potentially universe-ending threat remerge in the universe. The Unmaker is a billion-year-old celestial being who tried to destroy the Multiverse before The Living Tribunal subdued him and stored his body in the newly forming planet of Earth. In the present day, the Unmaker has finally woke up from his slumber and immediately starts unleashing destruction and chaos. To stop him, some of the greatest heroes on Earth assemble in what can only be described as a suicide mission.

In Dark Ages #1 by Tom Taylor, Iban Coello, Brian Reber, and VC's Joe Sabino, Uatu the Watcher reveals he's been paying particular attention to Earth to warn them of the Unmaker's arrival. After warning the heroes, the Earth has only hours left until it's destroyed. So they assemble a strike team consisting of Vision, The Thing, Sue Storm, Doctor Strange, and Scarlet Witch. The group immediately takes on the Unmaker but quickly finds out they're overmatched. Ben Grimm is burned alive and Scarlet Witch is unmade right in front of Vision.

As Vision jumps inside the Unmaker's head, Doctor Strange opens a portal to a dimension where no electricity could function - using it to depower it slowly. The Unmaker swiftly responds by shooting his robotic tendrils through Sue Storm's barrier and impaling Doctor Strange. With his last bit of magic, Strange summons a portal that sends Sue Storm away. While the Avengers and other teams succeeded in stopping the Unmaker, the portal would cause all power on their own dimension to turn off for good. Meanwhile, the team lost three of its most powerful members.

The heroes on Earth not only have to deal with all electricity and power shutting down, but they also have to continue on without three of their greatest champions. The deaths of Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, and The Thing were absolutely brutal and showed how powerful the Unmaker truly was. To survive in a world without them, Marvel's remaining Avengers and heroes will need to rely on each other more than ever. Dark Ages #1 is in comic book stores now.
