Quicksilver is one of the fastest Avengers who's ever lived, as his speed powers have come in handy on multiple occasions during the superteam's epic battles. However, before he was a hero, he was given a power that he really hasn't used all that much since: the ability to fly.

Pietro Maximoff, more commonly known by his superhero moniker Quicksilver, first appeared in The X-Men #4 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Quicksilver was originally a speedster villain alongside his magical sister, the Scarlet Witch and the pair were originally a part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, working alongside Magneto (who would later be revealed to be their father). While both Pietro and Wanda would eventually turn into heroes, with both working alongside the Avengers in both the comics and Marvel Cinematic Universe, early in Quicksilver's existence, he had a power that didn't make it into the movies.

In Avengers #43 by Stan Lee, George Bell, Jerry Mann, Roy Thomas and John Buscema, the issue opens with Quicksilver attacking Avengers headquarters. After toying with Captain America, Hercules, and Hawkeye, Quicksilver thrusts himself in the air and starts to fly. Even Scarlet Witch is surprised with Quicksilver - who has superhuman speed powers - as she wonders how her brother gained those powers. After Quicksilver and the Avengers calm down, Pietro reveals that he learned the ability to fly by vibrating his legs - allowing him to fly for short distances.

Quicksilver can FLY

Lee must have enjoyed making Quicksilver learning to fly because he'd later make the character do the same thing in X-Men #44. In that issue, the X-Men are trapped by Magneto and Toad (much to the chagrin of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch). Pietro manages to convince Magneto to let them live, but when Angel escapes, Quicksilver decides to use his flight powers to chase him out of the sky. While he's unsuccessful at capturing the escaped mutant, he does get quite a bit of height while flying.

Quicksilver Fly

Quicksilver's flight powers were limited, as after chasing Angel, he starts to fall to the ground thanks to momentum. So, while he technically flew by waving his legs and using his speed, it wasn't the most impressive power as it was very limited.

It's no surprise that the MCU avoided giving their version of Quicksilver the same powers since Pietro's speed is impressive on its own right. There's no need to make him fly, especially when he's not very good at it. No wonder Quicksilver's flight powers haven't stood the test of time.
