The teaser for "Avengers: No Surrender" hints at the death of Edwin Jarvis He was created by Stan Lee and Don Heck back in 1964, and has been a mainstay in the Avengers franchise ever since. But in an exclusive preview of Avengers #675, Marvel has revealed that Jarvis's days may be numbered!

We're coming to the end of 2017, and Marvel is teasing next year's epic adventures. First and foremost is "Avengers: No Surrender," an all-action story in which the Earth is stolen. Yes, you read that right, some phenomenal cosmic force has decided to steal the entire planet. It's a crossover that will force three teams of Avengers to assemble, and it kicks off in Avengers #675. For just 24 hours, Marvel fans can order a free digital copy of the first 13 pages if they head over to the Marvel Comics App or the Marvel Digital Comics Store.

The Earth is transported in a mysterious cosmic flare. Needless to say, this wreaks havoc on a global scale. And it looks to bode ill for the Avengers' favorite butler, Edwin Jarvis. The excerpt ends with what seems to a last-ditch act of heroism on the butler's part. He's out doing shopping with Nadia Pym, a.k.a. the new Wasp, and needless to say he understands Wasp has more important things to do than ensure the larder is fully-stocked.

But one Avenger isn't enough to save every life in chaos on this scale. Nadia doesn't notice a chunk of masonry that's about to fall on an innocent boy. But Jarvis does, and he intervenes in an act worthy of any Avenger. He pushes the kid out of the way, but that means he's directly beneath the masonry himself. The excerpt ends when Nadia turns round to find Jarvis's body buried beneath the rubble. There's no way an elderly gentleman like Jarvis could survive that.

It's a shocking start to "Avengers: No Surrender," giving an immediate note of tragedy to the event. Only time will tell whether or not it sticks, of course. The crossover event carries on from this year's Marvel Legacy #1, and that teases that history has been rewritten. We saw a brief glimpse of a statue showing the founding Avengers, including the mysterious woman named Voyager. She seems to have inserted himself into the history of the Marvel Comics universe, and who knows if she could rewrite history to save Jarvis? We'll find out next year.
