Despite the fact that Captain Marvel is easily one of, if not the strongest member of the Avengers, even her strength can’t match Marvel Comics’ newest super-villain.

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel became a superhero after she activated her latent powers passed down to her by her mother–who was of Kree descent. Once her powers were realized, Captain Marvel was able to fly, shoot photon blasts, exhibit super strength, and possess a durability that rivaled invulnerability. Throughout her career, Captain Marvel has used these amazing powers in a heroic capacity, both as a member of the Avengers on Earth and as a solo cosmic hero where she is able to put an end to the evil plots of practically any villain with minimal effort. However, during her latest fight, it seems as though Captain Marvel has finally met her match–or perhaps, someone who’s even better.

In All-Out Avengers #4 by Derek Landy and Greg Land, the Avengers find themselves on a mysterious alien planet while rescuing a team of scientist/explorers who were trapped there. On this planet, the Avengers encountered an alien race obsessed with a ritualistic hunt–and the Avengers were their prey. Thankfully, these aliens (known as the Drahl) were fairly low-tech in their hunting methods, making them pretty easy to defeat. However, there was one person hunting the Avengers who wasn’t a Drahl–she was someone who, for the most part, appeared human, but who represented a great evil in the universe that had not yet been revealed: a warrior known only as the Emissary.

The Emissary Made Captain Marvel Look Pathetic

Captain Marvel vs the Emissary.

The Emissary is exactly as her name suggests: an emissary–the Avengers just haven’t discovered the identity of who her master is. The only thing the Avengers know for sure is that the Emissary represents a cosmic force of destruction who wants to see the Avengers dead–and if the power of the Emissary is any reflection of her master’s power, the mysterious villain may very well succeed in this dark mission. However, before the Emissary’s power was fully processed by the Avengers, Captain Marvel challenged her in battle in order to protect her fellow heroes and the scientists they were rescuing. At first, it seemed as if Captain Marvel and the Emissary were evenly matched, but as the fighting progressed, the scales of power quickly tilted out of balance. Not only were none of Captain Marvel’s normally detrimental attacks having no impact on the Emissary, but Captain Marvel herself was getting injured while throwing them. At one point, Captain Marvel even breaks her own hand when she punches the Emissary in the face–outright showing a strength exhibited by the Emissary that isn’t even held by some of Marvel’s gods.

The fact that Captain Marvel–someone who is powerful on a cosmic scale–was suffering more injuries by attacking than her opponent was by being attacked is incredibly shocking. Captain Marvel was always believed to be unparalleled, but the existence of the Emissary (and to a greater extent, whoever the Emissary is working for) is proof that even Captain Marvel’s strength is inconsequential to some superhumans within the Marvel Universe–including the Avengers’ newest villain, the Emissary.
