The Avengers films are getting turned into plays by way of the Bard himself, William Shakespeare. The global phenomenon that propelled the Marvel Cinematic Universe to become the most successful film franchise in history, the Avengers first came together on the big screen in the eponymous 2012 film. Since then, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Infinity War, and Endgame all became some of the highest grossing films of all time, with three out of four sitting in the top 10 and Age of Ultron comfy at number 11.

Shakespeare, too, has had quite the successful run in cinemas and has broken some records himself, becoming the most filmed author in history. His works are still frequently adapted by Hollywood, some of which hue close to the plays themselves and some that adapt Shakespeare's plays more loosely. Like the MCU, Shakespeare adaptations have become a sub-genre in and of themselves and they show no sign of slowing down. These latest adaptations, though, will bring the Bard into brand new territory.

Author Ian Doescher is adapting all four of the Avengers films into Shakespearean plays for Quirk Books. The adaptations will include the authentic meter, verse, and rhyme of the plays and incorporate stage directions and Marvel easter eggs. The publisher promises that the adaptations will be "fully faithful" to the films and feature all the of the fans' "favorite scenes, characters, and lines" with an Olde English twist. William Shakespeare's The Avengers: The Complete Works will be available this September. Check out the full description of the book below:

At first glance, these adaptations sound absolutely bonkers, but author Doescher has done this kind of thing before. He famously published William Shakespeare's Star Wars, initially adapting the original three films. Doescher has also adapted other films into Shakespeare plays, including Mean Girls and Back to the Future, titled Much Ado About Mean Girls and Get Thee...Back to the Future! respectively. The Star Wars adaptation, for which he eventually adapted all nine films, was even performed live over Zoom in honor of Star Wars Day on May 4.

Luckily, the Avengers are no strangers to theater. One-time antagonist turned frenemy and sometimes ally, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), put on a play for the ages to recount the events of Thor: The Dark World, and it looks like Thor: Love and Thunder will have another play in the film. Whether or not those are up to par with Shakespeare is up for debate, but fans can compare how The Avengers measures up to the Bard when the book is finally released and all four films take on another pop culture phenomenon.
