The Avengers movies have one annoying tradition when it comes to the main villain, but Avengers: The Kang Dynasty presents the perfect opportunity to break it. The Kang Dynasty will be the first Avengers movie in six years, and it will mark the Avengers’ return to the big screen following the game-changing Avengers: Endgame. As has been made clear by the title, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will see Kang the Conqueror as the main villain – a character that offers a much different dynamic from other Avengers villains.

From The Avengers (2012) to Avengers: Endgame, every MCU Avengers movie has so far ended with a huge battle in which the main villain commands a horde of minions. Loki had the Chitauri army in The Avengers; Ultron had the countless Ultron bots in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Thanos had all sorts of armies working under him both in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Although that approach allows every Avenger to have a moment to shine during the third-act battle, it has become repetitive and makes the Avengers films too predictable. Kang, on the other hand, usually doesn’t have an army of minions, which means his battle against the Avengers can be more creative.

Kang’s Powers Means Avengers 5 Can Be The Saga’s Most Unique Film Yet

Kang The Conqueror and the Avengers

Unlike Ultron or Thanos, Kang isn’t known for his sheer strength or for the armies he commands. Instead, Kang’s most important skill is his intelligence – which he uses to develop and operate highly complex technology. While Avengers: Endgame featured time travel, the Avengers have never faced a villain who can use time as a weapon. The MCU is also making Kang a multiverse-related villain as explained by He Who Remains in Loki, which means Kang’s powers and skills can be even more unique in the franchise. Marvel’s Phase 4 has already established how dangerous it is to mess with the multiverse, which must be Kang’s entire goal considering The Kang Dynasty will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars. That unique type of threat can lead to a more unpredictable Avengers movie.

Why Kang The Conqueror Will Be Tougher To Defeat Than Thanos

Thanos and Kang

As powerful as Thanos was, defeating the Mad Titan essentially came down to beating Thanos and his army in a fight. Granted, the Avengers had to jump through time in order to retrieve the Infinity Stones, but a classic third-act fight was still necessary for the heroes to win in Endgame. When it comes to Kang, however, the fate of the entire multiverse might not depend on the Avengers’ strength only. It’s not even clear what version or versions of Kang the Avengers will face, which goes to show how more complex the time-traveler villain is compared to Thanos. Instead of facing a horde of minions, it would be interesting for the Avengers to fight multiple versions of Kang across time and space in The Kang Dynasty.

Kang the Conqueror is not an easy villain to adapt, and that is why he is the perfect villain for the next Avengers movie. While Loki, Ultron, and Thanos are very different characters, the way they faced the Avengers and even their goals were quite similar – which was a problem. The Marvel universe is more than just incredibly powerful villains, and given how the MCU is now more open to comic book concepts like the multiverse, there was no better villain to follow up Thanos than Kang. It remains to be seen how the Avengers’ fight against Kang will play out, and how creative Avengers: The Kang Dynasty can get with its villain.
