This article contains spoilers for Ant-Man #2

Marvel's worst hero of all time returns as the third Ant-Man commits his most atrocious sin yet - but it may not be too late for the "Irredeemable" superhero, who previously lost his life serving on the Secret Avengers. Eric O'Grady is the third superhero to bear the name Ant-Man, after Hank Pym and Scott Lang, but O'Grady is downright atrocious at being a superhero and isn't even remotely a moral person. Ant-Man #2 depicts O'Grady after years of absence at one of his lowest points: about to dig up the grave of another superhero for his own personal gain.

While classic Marvel fans know Ant-Man as Hank Pym, and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are more familiar with Scott Lang, Eric O'Grady is a relatively new addition to Marvel comics canon, first appearing in 2012 in Robert Kirkman's The Irredeemable Ant-Man. As a former SHIELD analyst, O'Grady came into possession of the famous prototype Ant-Man suit by stealing it, and subsequently only engaged in superheroics for his own benefit (for example, saving a woman from a criminal only to ask her out on a date immediately after). O'Grady engaged in numerous decidedly un-heroic activities (using the suit to spy on people, asking for money simply by virtue of being a superhero, etc) and notably never had any remorse.

In Ant-Man #2, written by Al Ewing with art by Tom Reilly, O'Grady is on the run from SHIELD operatives. With little knowledge of the prototype Ant-Man suit and no way to obtain more Pym Particles to begin the shrinking process, O'Grady resolves to do the unthinkable: dig up the body of Scott Lang in the hopes that his Ant-Man suit still has some particles remaining. "Am I really going to dig up a hero's grave in the hope that he was buried in costume?...I mean, yes. Clearly, I am." O'Grady believes that at least taking a moment to think about his deeds absolves him somewhat, and continues to dig up Lang's grave...by ordering the nearby ants to do it for him while he watches.

Later on in the issue, O'Grady comes face-to-face with a time traveler (heavily hinted to be a future version of Ant-Man) and only requests future knowledge about TV shows and the stock market - no information about impending disasters or upcoming wars, invasions, and other events he could be in a position to prevent. But O'Grady is sucked into a portal and is forced to follow this future superhero. Is O'Grady put on the path to redemption in this moment, or will he continue to live up to his name as the one 'Irredeemable' Ant-Man?

It must be noted that the previous two Ant-Men are not exactly saints themselves. Hank Pym had a short temper and beat his wife (albeit while under the influence of an otherworldly compound) and Scott Lang was an ex-criminal. However, both men eventually reformed while Eric O'Grady died while saving a child with the Secret Avengers, returning to life on a mission to look out for number one. Marvel's third Ant-Man rarely appears in comics today, as the other two are far more famous and heroic - but that could change in short time.
