Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo name Wolverine as the superhero they would've wanted to use in the upcoming flick. Despite the film already packed with several dozens of key players from the MCU, the directing duo admits that there are still some characters that they wished they were able to incorporate in the film. And like many fans, they, too, have the scruffy Canadian mutant as their top pick to join Earth's Mightiest Heroes in their impending bout against Mad Titan Thanos.

The beginning of the culmination of everything that transpired in the MCU since 2008's Iron Man, Infinity War will set the stage for the ultimate Phase 3 capper in next year's Avengers 4. Due to its catastrophic nature, the twin Avengers sequels are expected to significantly change the status quo in the franchise with multiple major deaths expected, making way for a breed of new heroes leading the charge come the franchise's mysterious Phase 4.

Speaking with GamesRadar during the London leg of the Infinity War global press tour, the Russos were questioned which superhero they would've wanted to use in the film but weren't able to. Joe was pretty straightforward with his answer saying: “Let’s open it up to favorite Marvel characters. It would probably be Wolverine,” to which Anthony hopefully chiming in by adding: “Yeah, maybe one day…” And with the impending Fox and Disney sale, the older Russo capped it all of teasing that “we could be close” to seeing the claw-wielding hero in the MCU.

Admittedly, Wolverine may not have been the most practical pick with regard to a superhero that could help the Avengers defeat Thanos considering that there is a plethora of other Marvel characters who are more powerful than the cigar-smoking mutant (like Jean Grey). However, given his complex origins, no-nonsense personality, and fan-favorite status, it will be great to see him interact with men out of time like him such as Captain America and Bucky or lose patience with the bickering between Star-Lord and Iron Man. All in all, he's a great piece to throw into an already packed cast knowing that he'll make the dynamic among characters more fun and interesting to watch.

It's also worth pondering over if fans, or the Russos' for that matter, pick Wolverine as the character they would've wanted to add to Infinity War due to Hugh Jackman's impeccable portrayal of the hero. The scruffy Canadian mutant Logan has become synonymous with the Australian actor following 17 years of playing the role across multiple films. But with the Oscar-nominee officially retiring the role last year via the critically-acclaimed Logan (despite hints that he may be back to reprise the role again in the MCU), it's curious if the directors would've still wanted to use him knowing that they need to introduce a new version of Wolverine following Jackman.

Since news of the Fox and Disney deal became public, Marvel fans have immediately started wondering how the X-Men and the Fantastic Four will fit in the established MCU. And while people will have to wait at least until next year for the buyout to become official and the mutants come home to Marvel Studios, there are some who persistently insisted that some of the separated heroes will make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. If anything, the Russos statement is a sign that at least Wolverine won't pop out by the end of the film considering that they were willing to name drop him during the interview.
