According to Kevin Feige, the last third of Avengers: Infinity War will take place in Wakanda. Though Marvel have yet to see a film bomb, each new movie comes with a risk. Certainly, some have performed lower than others, often when the movies are a new property rather than a sequel. In the case of Black Panther, however, that couldn't be further from the truth. Black Panther continues to rule the box office and Wakanda has become a household name.
Aside from Black Panther's success being good news for Marvel and their hope of turning it into a new franchise, it also bodes well for their massive team-up Avengers: Infinity War that will arrive in less than two months. Thanks to EW's Avengers: Infinity War coverage, we know just about every Avenger and Guardian will make their way to Wakanda as Thanos' horde seeks Vision's Mind Stone. But while the footage and images we've seen so far haven't made it clear when in the movie the African battle takes place, now we know just how important Wakanda is to the film.
EW spoke with Kevin Feige about the past, present, and future of the MCU, including some lengthy discussions about Avengers: Infinity War. For Feige, Marvel's tendency to go all in on concepts and films once again worked out in their favor as Wakanda will play in essential role in Avengers 3 and audiences couldn't be more primed to head back to the kingdom at the moment.
"That’s the grand Marvel Studios/MCU tradition of just being all in, right? All in on stuff we believe in, before the audience tells us what they think. You’ve heard us talk ad nauseam about the fact that we were in production on Avengers before either Thor or Captain America was released. Same thing with the whole third act of Infinity War being in Wakanda."
Fans have already joked online that Black Panther 2 is coming on April 27, and Feige's comments only add some realism to that. Dozens of characters will be coming together for the film, and Avengers: Infinity War will head to Thanos' planet, meaning Earth will hardly be the only location. With that in mind, focusing the final act of the film in a location only properly revealed in the MCU last month could have been a risk.
Luckily, audiences are obsessed with Wakanda and its citizens and many key players will be back to help fight Thanos. Likely, Avengers 4 will also feature many of T'Challa's pantheon, which is good news as Black Panther 2 might not arrive until 2021. There's sure to be action playing out in other locations during the climax of Avengers: Infinity War, but for fans eager to head back to Wakanda, you won't have to wait long.
