Almost every single Marvel Cinematic Universe hero is present for the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War, so why is an original member like Hawkeye not shown? The day many have been waiting for has finally come with Marvel debuting the first trailer for Infinity War early this morning. The trailer delivers on the promise of Thanos' arrival and what he will do as he gathers all six Infinity Stones. As big of a spotlight as he gets, the countless heroes are still at the forefront. Even with an opening featuring voiceover from some of its biggest stars and shots of most major set pieces, Hawkeye is nowhere to be found.
Hawkeye has routinely drawn the short end of the stick in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He didn't get a supporting level role to introduce him like Black Widow did in Iron Man 2, and his first true appearance in The Avengers saw Loki take Jeremy Renner under his control. He got a bigger role in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but was completely absent from all other Phase 2 films. So far in Phase 3, he was part of the ensemble for Captain America: Civil War, and ended that film locked away, looking to be part of Captain America's 'Secret Avengers' team.
If Hawkeye is part of Cap's new team in the film, he's (again) not shown in any of their scenes together. One of the best moments of the trailer is Team Cap - comprised of Cap, Bucky, Falcon, and Black Widow - running through Wakanda alongside Hulk, War Machine, Black Panther, and Okoye (Danai Gurira). Hawkeye should be included in this shot if he's still part of the group. If he isn't, who he joins up with is not clear. Thor is with the Guardians in space, while Stark and Banner are working with Doctor Strange and Wong - and Spidey is helping them at parts too it seems. There doesn't appear to be a place for him.
It has already been confirmed that Renner is back for Infinity War (and he appeared in the recent Vanity Fair photoshoot), so the decision to hide him from the marketing isn't a matter of protecting spoilers.
The fact that Hawkeye is not included at all in the trailer is sure to raise some eyebrows and surely frustration at the way Marvel is once again treating someone as important as him. His arc in Infinity War hasn't been clearly established, but the way he is looking for Avengers 4 teases a potentially devastating story for the archer. It is possible that after Civil War, Barton decided to return to his secret family farm and is simply out of action for most of the film - or until something terrible happens in his life and forces him to get back into the superhero game.
As this is just the first look at Infinity War, Marvel will have plenty of time to fix this potential oversight or show why Hawkeye isn't included here to begin with. Whatever the reasoning may be for why this happened, Hawkeye's role will hopefully become more clear in the months ahead. Until then, Clint's importance in Infinity War will continue to be questioned.
