With the first teaser for Avengers: Infinity War finally here, fans are that much closer to the epic culmination of the MCU's ten year plan. Though Marvel Studios has assembled some large casts before, next year's film will mark the most headlining actors and characters in a film ever. Worlds will collide when the science of Bruce Banner and Tony Stark encounters the magic of Doctor Strange and Wong. Captain America and his Secret Avengers will join forces with the Wakandans who will get the spotlight early next year in Black Panther. And the Guardians of the Galaxy will pick up a stray Thor as he floats through the cosmos, bringing the intergalactic heroes to Earth.
Despite all the major team-ups and character interactions teased in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer, a few faces were missing. Hawkeye was a no-show in the Infinity War teaser, marking the biggest absence given his longstanding role in the franchise. For speculation on his absence, check out the article at the link below. For everyone else who was AWOL from the highly-anticipated teaser, read on.
Ant-Man & the Wasp
Ant-Man & the Wasp will see Evangeline Lilly suit up just two months after Avengers: Infinity War, so many fans may be wondering why she was absent from the trailer. Of course, she wasn't alone, as the film's other headlining hero was nowhere to be seen.
Though some claimed Ant-Man's costume could be spotted during the Wakandan standoff, it's clearly just Okoye's similarly-colored armor behind Captain America. Alongside Hawkeye, Ant-Man marks the most conspicuous absence from the trailer. The explanation for this is unknown, but he was also absent from the Avengers: Infinity War poster from earlier this year.
The Wasp is easier to explain, as Kevin Feige has long stated she won't be in the film so she can get her proper debut in Ant-Man & the Wasp. Still, her appearance alongside Hank Pym and Scott Lang in the recent Vanity Fair shoot has led to some confusion.
Nick Fury and Maria Hill
Considering the whole concept of the MCU and the Avengers kicked off with Samuel L. Jackson's surprise cameo as Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man, it was strange when word broke that he was sitting out both upcoming Avengers films. After all, he created the Avengers Initiative and can even be heard at the beginning of the teaser as his initial pitch is retold.
Maria Hill didn't arrive until The Avengers, but she is still a notable absence. Both Fury and Hill have run S.H.I.E.L.D. in the comics and have regularly appeared in the MCU films and Agents of SHIELD. Jackson and Colbie Smulders were also in the recent photoshoot, but it's uncertain what exactly that means for their status in Avengers: Infinity War.
Valkyrie may be new to the MCU, but Tessa Thompson made quite a splash as the swaggering hero in Thor: Ragnarok. Even before the film arrived, word broke that Thompson would be back as Valkyrie in Avengers: Infinity War. Because of that, it was quite unusual to not see her in the teaser. After all, Ragnarok just came out and made a big impact at the box office.
We know that Thor somehow gets separated from his people and meets the Guardians, so perhaps Valkyrie will arrive with reinforcements at some point in the movie. Either way, fans are likely eager to see her in action once a full trailer arrives.
