Thor's new weapon in Avengers: Infinity War is confirmed to be... Mjolnir. Ever since Hela destroyed Mjolnir - Thor's most precious and iconic weapon - in Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok, comic book fans have been putting together wild theories trying to figure out if Thor will rebuild Mjolnir (and how he would going about doing that) or if the Norse god will construct a new weapon. As it turns out, Thor is going with the latter option.
The first trailer for Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers: Infinity War from November revealed the possible origin of Thor's new weapon, which, at that time, was believed to be Jarnbjorn. Earlier that year, key art showcased Thor carrying what looked like an ax. It was shortly thereafter that Marvel released the first teaser for Ragnarok and audiences realized that Thor would be wielding a new weapon in Avengers 3. And a leaked LEGO set hinted at Thor's new ax, which has now been confirmed by yet another leaked toy - though it might not be the weapon that people were expecting.
A new photo surfaced online this weekend showcasing what looks to be Thor's new weapon in Avengers: Infinity War. While many people were expecting to see Jarnbjorn, the new toy actually appears to suggest that Thor wields the Ultimate version of Mjolnir - a half-hammer, half-ax (somewhat of a combination of Janbjorn and Stormbreaker) that Thor used on Earth-1610 - in the upcoming superhero film. For someone who's been around as long as Thor has, he's sure used a lot of weapons. While Jarnbjorn was an obvious choice for Thor in Avengers 3, the Ultimate Mjolnir makes the most sense. Aside from the fact that Marvel tends to borrow heavily from Marvel Comics' Ultimate Universe for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor wielding a weapon that's at least part hammer fits with his overall adoration for hammer-like weapons. (Somewhere in an alternate universe, Thor might also be the God of Hammers.)
Regardless of whether Thor uses an ax or an ax/hammer mix in the film, though, it's clear that he does, indeed, construct a new weapon in Avengers: Infinity War with the help of Groot and Rocket Raccoon. After all, who better to help him on a special mission such as this one than the Guardians of the Galaxy? And what's more, Groot appears to lend Thor a piece of himself to use as the weapon's hilt. Considering that Groot possesses superhuman durability and unique plasticity, his limbs(?) make for incredibly sturdy material for the new Mjolnir.
