A new video features Avengers: Infinity War directors the Russo Brothers breaking down the first meeting between Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy - and how the duo's comedy experience paid off. Marvel's latest film is shattering records at the box office, and Avengers 3 may be the fastest film to earn $1 billion thanks to this weekend. With little in the way of competition, the team-up has nothing stopping it from dominating in theaters, especially given the acclaim it's received so far.
Though a number of factors went into making the movie a success, it's clear that the magic touch of Anthony and Joe Russo was a big part of it. When the dup were tapped to jump from directing episodes of Community and Arrested Development to helm Captain America: The Winter Soldier, fans were left scratching their heads. The team ended up turning in the most mature MCU entry to date, one packed with action and character development. Since then, their work on Captain America: Civil War actually left many wondering if Avengers 3 would be too serious, with the duo's past work almost forgotten given their high-profile successes.
Vanity Fair had the Russo Brothers break down a key scene in Avengers: Infinity War, and it actually served as the perfect reminder of their comedy roots. With Thor (fresh off of the absurdist Thor: Ragnarok) and the Guardians meeting for the first time, plenty of humor was needed. Luckily, the Russos were able to match the Guardians dialogue written by James Gunn with their own skill in directing comedic scenes.
The 'Notes on a Scene' series has become a great way for Marvel directors to reveal their process. Taika Waititi broke down a Thor 3 scene involving the God of Thunder and Loki that showed his own knack for blending comedy with emotional character work. We heard many of the other MCU directors were on hand for Avengers 3, and there's a good chance Waititi lent his expertise in this department given what befalls Odin's children.
Earlier this year, we also saw Ryan Coogler break down Black Panther's casino scene, which demonstrated his ability to craft an exhilarating action scene. Coogler and Waititi both brought a lot of prestige to the MCU, and it's that level of skill and attention that has allowed Marvel films to rise above their peers. And though the Russos weren't quite as regarded before they joined Marvel Studios, Avengers: Infinity War is another feather in their collective cap.
The scene involving Thor and the Guardians is also another reminder of how unique those two franchises are. If Marvel can continue channeling that sort of energy into their future cosmic films, then it will go a long way towards grounding some of their more outlandish concepts. And with any luck, the Russos will keep working with Marvel after Avengers 4 and supply more of what they brought to Avengers: Infinity War to the rest of the MCU.
