Robert Downey Jr. posted a photo of Stan Lee visiting the Avengers: Infinity War set. No Marvel film is complete without a visit to the set by Stan Lee, who, with the likes of Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby, created some of the most iconic pop culture figures of all time, including Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk and Doctor Strange.

Therefore, when Lee visits a set like the one for Avengers: Infinity War, in a sense, it's like he's reuniting with old friends - brought to life, naturally, by the likes of Downey, Tom Holland, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Benedict Cumberbatch.

In a new Instagram post by Downey Tuesday, Lee appears to be sharing a laugh with the Tony Stark/Iron Man actor. Also included in the photo are co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo, as well as Holland and Cumberbatch. While the production is currently filming in Queens, New York (Spider-Man's hometown, which perhaps explains Holland's presence on the set), the green screen environment suggests that they're filming on a soundstage somewhere in the Big Apple. Appropriately, Downey is using the post to pay respect to the set's esteemed guest, as his comments include, "I owe it all to you ...," as well as #thankyou and #represent.

It's difficult to determine whether Lee is on-set merely for a casual visit or to film a cameo. In all likelihood it's just a visit, considering that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed in April that Lee was on location in Atlanta, Georgia, to film shoot cameos for four upcoming Marvel projects, including one for Avengers: Infinity War.

Presuming the photo of the Marvel Comics legend was taken Tuesday, Lee's visit to the Avengers: Infinity War set comes less than a week after the sad news of the passing of Joan Lee, his wife of 69 years. Joan Lee, who was 93, reportedly suffered a stroke early last week and hospitalized, and had passed away on July 6. Tributes to Lee's wife came pouring in after her passing, including a heartfelt video tribute from Marvel.

Making a public appearance so soon after a sudden and devastating loss surely had to be a difficult thing for Lee to do, and you have to believe that the likes of Downey, Cumberbatch, Holland and the Russo brothers were all inspired by his presence. And as Avengers: Infinity War and its Untitled Avengers sequel nears the end of its six months of principal photography, it's only appropriate that Lee is there as a reassuring face to help the cast and filmmakers wrap up the momentus production.
