Joss Whedon shares his thoughts on how the MCU has grown since the first Avengers in 2012 saying that he's "a little jealous" of the Russos for being able to work on Avengers: Infinity War. It feels like it's been a lifetime since the first time Earth's Mightiest Heroes assembled on the big screen. Over the years, the famed superhero franchise has continuously expanded with new heroes opening new narrative opportunities such as the Guardians of the Galaxy (cosmic), Doctor Strange (multi-dimensions) and Ant-Man (Quantum Realm), but the MCU wouldn't have the same prestige that it has now if not for Whedon's The Avengers.

The first big culmination of the MCU, the smashing success of The Avengers paved the way for the franchise to continue growing. It was proof that a shared cinematic universe could work, prompting other movie companies to follow suit. Finally, it solidified Marvel Studios' place in Hollywood as a movie company. All of this thanks to Whedon's (ultimately) great character work on the flick.

Catching up with THR during Infinity War's star-studded premiere event in Los Angeles earlier this week, Whedon was asked about any difference between the first Avengers film six years ago and this latest one. Obviously, the cast has gotten bigger, but for the filmmaker personally, he admitted to be a bit jealous not being able to work on such a massive project with all these characters.

"I'm less tired and excited 'cos I don't know what happens and you know, a little jealous...Well you know, you got the Guardians in there, they got just you know, every living human being who wasn't in a Harry Potter movie is in this film and so that's, I don't envy them. There's a reason why I said 'two and out,' but I wish I got to play with all those characters a little bit."

From the sound of it, Whedon didn't play any part whatsoever during the creative process of making Infinity War, despite the fact that the Russos have reached out to a lot of Marvel directors, some of them even executive producing the film like Jon Favreau and James Gunn. Having said that, in retrospect, the Russos didn't really need help from Whedon considering that they've previously worked with the majority of these characters in Captain America: Civil War which is the set-up to Avengers 3. If anything, they probably should've kept in touch with him (if they didn't already) before taking on Cap 3 given that Age of Ultron technically precedes it. It's also important to note that at that time that the next twin Avengers sequels were in production, the 53-year-old was heavily involved in DC's own cinematic universe working on Batgirl and then eventually helming Justice League's reshoots.

As for what's next for him following his total exit from the the DCEU, Whedon revealed that he's working on something not Marvel or DC-related. Unfortunately, the filmmaker was cagey about the details, but he shared that it will still have hints of the currently popular superhero story tropes. "I'm thinking of something of my own right now which is fun, but every thing I do has an element of the superhero in it, there's a reason why we keep telling these stories and right now the world really needs to believe that people with power can be decent for some reason," he teased.
