Thanos co-creator Jim Starlin has given his review of Avengers: Infinity War - and it's a definite thumbs up.
Jim Starlin is one of the most popular writers in modern comics. He's best known for creating vast swathes of Marvel's cosmic universe; it's impossible to watch Guardians of the Galaxy without seeing Starlin's characters and concepts. But, among most modern comic book fans, Starlin is best known as the co-creator of Thanos. Starlin's also the man who wrote some of the most loved Thanos stories, including the iconic Infinity Gauntlet miniseries. As a result, his view on Infinity War was always going to matter a lot to fans of the comics.
Starlin attended the Infinity War world premiere on Monday. Now critic reviews are out, he's taken to Facebook to give a (non-spoiler) review of his own. Determined not to spoil the film's many surprises, Starlin decided to focus in on the generalities - with one specific exception, Josh Brolin's Thanos. "Brolin is an incredible Thanos," Starlin confirmed, "moving and emoting just as I tried to portray him in the comics." While Infinity War has reworked the Mad Titan's motives - he now seeks to "rebalance the universe" - that really doesn't seem to have troubled Starlin.
For Starlin, the film works because it "hits emotional depth few of the others have even come close to... There are a couple times my chest constricted from what I was seeing, making me want to cry. You'll recognize those instances when you watch the film." But, for all the film has a lot of emotion to it, it also has a lot of humor. "Humor," Starlin noted, "takes center stage at all the right moments."
It's true that Starlin is hardly an unbiased commentator. He was actually a little involved in the production, even getting a set visit. Although Starlin has cut ties with Marvel Comics, he has absolutely no issues with Marvel Studios. Reflecting on the spectacle, the famous comic book writer noted that he's probably going to have to rewatch the film a number of times before he gets "a solid grip on just how good it is." Writing over a day after the viewing, he noted that he's "still at that rather stunned point."
Starlin's review will be music to the ears of any comic book fan. Concluding his review, he offers his heartfelt thanks to the entire production team "for bringing everyone's favorite Titan to life in the best way possible, in a jaw-droppingly awesome fashion." For Starlin, Avengers: Infinity War gets a full 10 out of 10 score. Starlin typically works with some of the most spectacular, cosmic concepts in the Marvel Comics universe NS his review suggests audiences are in for a spectacular visual treat, one filled with emotion and pathos.
