SPOILERS: Everybody Who Dies in Avengers: Infinity War

WARNING: This post contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Infinity War pits the superheroes against their most formidable foe yet in Thanos; here's a complete list of every death in the third Avengers film. After 10 years and 18 movies of buildup, Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War finally hits theaters. The 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is said to be the beginning of the end of the franchise's overarching narrative thus far. As such, heroes from all across the sprawling superhero universe come together to battle Thanos, the Mad Titan bent on killing half the universe in order to bring balance.

Given the strength of Thanos, and his goal of assembling all the Infinity Stones to complete his Infinity Gauntlet, fans have expected one or more of the heroes to meet their end in the film. In fact, as has been laid out in trailers for Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos can snap his fingers and eliminate half the universe. And, as the ending of Avengers: Infinity War shows, he does just that. The movie ends with a brutal sequence of multiple members of the Avengers disintegrating into dust - though there are notable deaths before then. Now, we break down every death in Avengers: Infinity War.

The first two deaths arrive early on in the movie, with Heimdall meeting his end when he's stabbed by one of the members of Thanos' Black Order. Then, after Loki tries to trick Thanos in order to get the upper hand, the Mad Titan chokes the God of Mischief to death (though it's not the first time Loki has appeared to have been killed). Later on in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos must make a sacrifice to obtain the Soul Stone - a soul for a soul - and he kills Gamora by throwing her off a cliff on Vormir.

Over the course of Avengers: Infinity War, each member of Thanos' Black Order is killed. Ebony Maw dies when he's blasted into space by Spider-Man, Iron Man and Doctor Strange; Bruce Banner kills Cull Obsidian by attaching part of the Hulkbuster suit to him and sending him into the barrier protecting Wakanda; Proxima Midnight is killed by Scarlet Witch after battling her, Okoye and Black Widow; and Corvus Glaive meets his end by way of his own staff, which is wielded by Vision. In the final act of the movie, Vision also dies - twice. First, Scarlet Witch destroys the Mind Stone, killing him. Then, Thanos turns back time with the Time Stone and uses his strength to rip the Mind Stone out of Vision, killing him again.

In the final moments of Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos uses the Infinity Gauntlet to snap his fingers and wipe out half the universe. After he snaps his fingers, viewers see various members of the Avengers disintegrate to ash. The complete list (including those appearing in the Avengers: Infinity War after-credits scene) include: Bucky Barnes, Black Panther, Groot, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Mantis, Drax, Quill, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Maria Hill, and Nick Fury.

There are still a few Marvel characters whose fates we don't know because it's not shown whether they survived Thanos snapping his fingers. Most notably, this includes Pepper Potts, Shuri, and Wong, who all appear earlier in the film. However, since Infinity War is an installment in a comic book movie universe, not all the deaths may stick. Avengers 4 will wrap up the first three phases of the MCU, and it may undo some of what happened in Infinity War since we know it deals with time travel. Of course, Avengers 4 will bring deaths of its own, so Marvel Studios' heroes - even those left standing at the end of Avengers: Infinity War - are by no means safe.
