Warning: SPOILERS Below For Avengers: Infinity War!

-

The ending of Avengers: Infinity War was certainly dark, but there are still positives to the Avengers' situation that are being overlooked. Now, there is no getting around the fact that Thanos won. He accomplished his lifelong goal: he collected all six Infinity Stones and wiped out half of all life in the universe. Thanos still has the Infinity Gauntlet too, although he's relaxing from a genocide well done on an unnamed world. Meanwhile, most of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy are dead. However, there's still hope for the heroes in Avengers 4!

The most important silver lining to cling to is that Doctor Strange has a plan. We know the Master of the Mystic Arts saw the one future in 14,000,605 where the Avengers beat Thanos. Once Strange surrendered the Time Stone in defeat, he announced that they had entered "the endgame." Unfortunately, he dissipated into dust without sharing the details of what he was up to with Tony Stark, who Thanos kept alive thanks to that deal. But Doctor Strange is a wizard with many tricks up his sleeve, so trust that he's about to pull the greatest rabbit out of his hat.

Even if the Avengers who still live can't rely on the late sorcerer's machinations, they do retain a few key resources and advantages they can exploit. One of the biggest boons is that somehow, at least five of the six founding Avengers lived through Thanos' finger snap (we don't know what happened to Hawkeye yet, but it's quite possible the entire original team is intact). Whether they have a Hulk they can rely upon is one of many big issues for Avengers 4 to resolve. However, Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Hulk have proven to be the most effective combination of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. The odds are stacked against them, but together they have a shot at a winning against Thanos. Plus there are new heroes like Ant-Man, the Wasp, and Thor's ally Valkyrie who can bolster their ranks.

The Avengers also have the means to get to Thanos: Thor is the only hero who actually came out stronger from Infinity War, and his new weapon Stormbreaker can open the Bifrost. Even if Thor presently has no clue Tony Stark is on Titan with Nebula, they have access to the Guardians' ship, the Benatar, so they can get to Earth with ease. Speaking of Nebula, she's now the only living being in the universe who knows Thanos intimately. She likely knows "her father's" whereabouts. She may even suspect Gamora lives within the Soul World of the Soul Stone.

Once back on Earth, Stark will not be playing around; the Bleeding Edge armor he wore against Thanos was loaded with enough weaponry to earn the Mad Titan's respect - and Tony wasn't even ready for Thanos. This time, Iron Man will be armed to the teeth. Stark is sure to open his toy chest and bring everything he's got to bear against the purple demigod. Speaking of incredible technology, Wakanda lost their king T'Challa to Thanos' evil, but that means Okoye and M'Baku are sure to want to exact revenge. They will bring all of their kingdom's arsenal of Vibranium weapons and technology to the greatest war Wakanda has ever fought. If Shuri also survived, she could even assume the mantle of Black Panther.

Lastly, though the Avengers have no knowledge of this, Nick Fury contacted Captain Marvel before he faded away. They may never have heard of Carol Danvers but they're about to get some incredibly powerful help in Avengers 4. If the Avengers can find a way to somehow bring their friends back to life, even better (it would allow Star-Lord to redeem himself from being the worst hero).

So while the current circumstances are undoubtedly bleak, the Avengers do have a ton of firepower to hit back against Thanos: the cliffhanger ending doesn't have to mean the fight is over. Although, with any luck, Thanos will somehow cause his own defeat.
