Avengers 3 Has 'More Surprises' Than Other Marvel Films

Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo teases the presence of several unexpected characters and including more surprises than any MCU film.

Infinity War

Co-director Joe Russo says Avengers: Infinity War has more surprises than any other MCU film, including bringing in some unexpected characters. Marvel Studios has been building towards Infinity War for what will be a complete decade by the time it hits theaters. They've continued to tout their biggest blockbuster as a culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to this point, and have brought together basically every single character in order to make good on that promise. Not only are they all gathering together for the sake of the event, but also so there is enough firepower to try and stop Thanos.

Fans have been looking forward to the film for years and have been dying to get the first trailer. The anticipation comes from years of following the franchise, but also the intrigue of seeing Marvel heroes from different franchises interact. Finding out who is in the movie is one thing, but learning more about the story is also of interest for many. The film and its large cast has been highly covered, and one of the directors is still teasing plenty of surprises.

CNET spoke with Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo about their next Marvel effort. The interview covers a variety of topics and the Russos carefully sidestepping any details too revealing. They were however asked about the cast and the possible inclusion of unexpected characters. To the surprise of no one, they didn't reveal any of the surprises, only teasing there are plenty planned.

Joe Russo: There's going to be a lot of unexpected characters. There are more surprises packed into this film than any of the others. Part of that is character interactions, new interesting characters, characters that have made small appearances that are really getting fleshed out in this film. A lot of people enjoy the experience, so I don't want to give anything away, but certainly you can expect lots of surprises.

The cast of Infinity War has grown through a variety of ways with set photos, reports from reliable sources (and some less reliable ones), and official information from Marvel all adding pieces to the puzzle. The inclusion of any main superheroes will be far from unexpected, so this latest tease from the Joe Russo may pertain more to some minor characters coming in or even the debut of some new ones. Speculation has run wild over Namor, MODOK, and others possibly being included in Infinity War or Untitled Avengers. Furthermore, this latest quote is sure to ignite the hopes of even some TV characters popping up due to such a crossover being highly unlikely, and thus, unexpected.

Outside of just the characters and surprise appearances from a few unexpected ones, Joe Russo also teases a new level of surprises in general. These could pertain to the story itself and surprising audiences (and especially fans) with how the plot unfolds, but also character interactions and relationships as Joe teased. Mark Ruffalo recently said Hulk and Rocket Raccoon are buddies in Infinity War, so that would fit with this latest tease. The question will now become how many of these surprises stay that way until next May or leak ahead of time. The former is hopefully the way this all plays out, but is appears as though fans should expect the unexpected when it comes to Avengers: Infinity War.
