Captain America almost had a completely different shield in Avengers: Infinity War that would've paid off a tease in Spider-Man: Homecoming. One of the most iconic parts of Captain America's costume is his trusty shield, and it's been with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's version of the man out of time since the beginning. Made out of the rare vibranium metal, the various capabilities of the red, blue, and white shield have tremendously helped out Steve Rogers during his days as a super hero.

However, at the end of Captain America: Civil War, he lets go of the shield as he goes into hiding with Falcon, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch. When they reappeared in Avengers: Infinity War, Cap's entire look had changed. He grew a beard and the rest of his hair, his suit started to wither away, and he remained without a shield. Once he joined the larger battle by going to Wakanda, T'Challa fitted him with a pair of retractable mini shields that could fit on his forearms, but he almost got a very different shield instead.

Fausto De Martini has unveiled a series of first looks at alternate version of Captain America's shield that were designed for Avengers: Infinity War - and not Avengers: Endgame. The new magnetic shield is completely different from anything else that Cap has sported in the past. Martini confirmed on his Instagram posts that this new shield was actually created by Tony Stark, meaning this could've been the new shield Happy Hogan mentioned Tony had designed in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Unfortunately, the idea for this shield was not used, but fans can see what could've been below.

Captain America has had a slightly magnetized shield before in the MCU, but not in the same way. Stark previously designed Steve's suit in Avengers: Age of Ultron to have a magnetic connection to the shield, so it would easily come back to him or make it easier for him to grab it. This new shield though would appear to have larger magnetic capabilities based on the edge of it, but what exactly this could be used for isn't known.

If this is the shield teased from Spider-Man: Homecoming, it's disappointing that such a tease was never paid off. That said, the movie also set up a belt for Thor that wasn't mentioned during Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame, so these inventions by Tony Stark will likely never be seen in the MCU. It also could've been odd to see Captain America with a proper shield that wasn't in his traditional color set or design, but this could also just be an unfinished prototype that Cap could've used. Either way, this magnetized shield was left out of Avengers: Infinity War altogether, so we'll likely never know the full story behind it, since Steve's story with the MCU has come to an end. That is unless the new Captain America finds this prototype somewhere.
