Avengers: Infinity War passes Titanic on the all-time domestic box office charts as it concludes its theatrical run. The cinematic event 10 years in the making, Infinity War did not disappoint when it finally premiered back in April. Bringing together all of the corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, critics and audiences enjoyed what directors Joe & Anthony Russo put together, as Infinity War rode its Certified Fresh rating to a worldwide haul of more than $2 billion. It is just the fourth film in history to reach that total.

As Infinity War shattered records during its opening frame, many wondered just how high Marvel's epic crossover could go. While it was unable to top the studio's first massive blockbuster of 2018, Black Panther (an event few would have predicted at the start of the year), Infinity War was still an astronomical commercial success. With the film bowing out of theaters, it sits comfortably in the top five.

According to Box Office MojoInfinity War's time in theaters came to a close on Thursday, September 13. The final U.S. tally stands at $678.8 million, nearly $20 million more than James Cameron's romance-drama. It's fourth on the all-time domestic chart, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avatar, and Black Panther.

Iron Man Fighting With Doctor Strange Infinity War

While it's surprising Infinity War won't be the highest-grossing film of 2018, it is definitely not a shock to see it gross this much in theaters. Over the past 10 years, Marvel has established themselves as the industry's biggest franchise by consistently delivery quality tentpoles that have widespread appeal. Even adaptations of their most obscure comic titles (like Guardians of the Galaxy) went on to become massive hits, illustrating the MCU's tremendous drawing power. There's no denying that some individual series are more popular than others, but whenever Marvel does a team-up film like Infinity War, it becomes a must-see event. Regardless of who a viewer's favorite MCU character is, they needed to watch it in order to witness the next chapter of the story. Plus, with all that was going on in Infinity War, repeat viewings happened frequently.

Keeping Infinity War's devastating cliffhanger ending in mind, it'll be interesting to see how Avengers 4 fares when it comes out next year. Obviously, fans are going to want to see the conclusion of the narrative and the (possible) defeat of Thanos. It's rare for the sequel to a record-breaking film to post similar or better numbers, but this could be the exception to the rule. Avengers 4 is being set up as the last fight for the core team that served as the franchise's foundation in Phase 1, so that bit of nostalgia (plus the help of heroes like Ant-Man and Captain Marvel), could give it a nice boost and help it soar past Infinity War.
