Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo have confirmed that Carrie Coon is a member of the film's cast. This month's Marvel Cinematic Universe movie brings the Mad Titan Thanos and his quest to collect the Infinity Stones into the spotlight, paying off a series of mid-credits scene teases that date back to the original Avengers movie. Thanos also made a brief appearance during the 2014 MCU film Guardians of the Galaxy, where audiences were introduced to two of his "children", Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan). All three characters will play key roles in Infinity War, which will further flesh out their messy relationship in the process.

Infinity War will further introduce audiences to the Black Order, a collection of four dangerous aliens that do Thanos' bidding. The members of the Black Order have already been glimpsed throughout the film's marketing, though the Russo Brothers have been hesitant to reveal much more about them beyond what the trailers establish (in short, they're not kind). Last year, however, Irish actor Tom Vaughan-Lawlor confirmed that he is playing one of the four members of the Black Order, Ebony Maw. Now the Russos have confirmed that Coon is playing the sole female member of the team.

Speaking with Radio Times, the Russo Brothers (Joe Russo specifically) confirmed that Coon is playing Proxima Midnight in Infinity War. The directors further confirmed Vaughan-Lawlor's role as Ebony Maw and that Terry Notary portrays Cull Obsidian, a mostly silent character known as Black Dwarf in the original comics. Notary is best known as a motion-capture performer for his work on the Planet of the Apes trilogy and films like Warcraft and Kong: Skull Island, where he did performance-capture for Kong. Joe Russo affirmed to Radio Times that Notary also voices Cull Obsidian, calling him "one of the most gifted movement specialists in the world right now."

Coon is an acclaimed character actor who recently received a Primetime Emmy nomination for her work on the third season of FX's anthology series Fargo. Better known to some for playing Norah Durst on all three seasons of HBO's dramatic TV series The Leftovers, Coon has also played key roles in movies like David Fincher's Gone Girl, Steven Spielberg's The Post, and 12 Years a Slave director Steve McQueen's upcoming crime drama Widows. She further appeared opposite Thanos himself, actor Josh Brolin, in Jody Hill's comedy The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter.

This also means that three of the four Black Order actors in Infinity War have now been identified, save for the actor playing Corvus Glaive. Peter Dinklage has long been rumored to play a role like that, and the Game of Thrones star's involvement was recently confirmed by Infinity War's marketing material. The Russo Brothers have further teased that audiences will "certainly recognize" Dinklage in the film, though they did caution that it "may take you a beat or two." That could certainly be interpreted as a hint that Dinklage is playing the CGI Corvus Glaive in the movie, if nothing else.
