Infinity War Becomes Second-Fastest Film to Cross $500 Million Domestically

Avengers: Infinity War crosses $500 million at the U.S. box office, thereby making it the second-fastest movie to pass the milestone.

Avengers: Infinity War is now the second-fastest movie to cross the $500 million mark domestically. The Marvel Cinematic Universe mega-hit is already one of the most commercially successful movies of all time, having smashed box office records both in the U.S. and abroad. And, despite an uphill battle to become the top-grossing movie of all time, Infinity War could still blast past the $2 billion mark worldwide.

Anthony and Joe Russo's latest MCU outing, ultimately, may not reach Avatar's global box office record, but its immense early domestic success, including scoring the biggest-ever U.S. opening weekend, could have it land in one of the top spots on both the domestic and worldwide charts - behind films like Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens - and its latest box office milestone proves that it's on its way up there.

Variety reports that Avengers: Infinity War grossed $16 million on Friday, bringing its domestic total to $502 million, which means that it's the second-fastest movie to cross the $500 million mark at the U.S. box office. It took Infinity War 15 days to pass that threshold, which is faster than Star Wars: The Last Jedi (16 days) and Black Panther (17 days). However, The Force Awakens still reigns supreme in that regard, having earned $540 million in just 10 days. At the moment, Infinity War is projected to finish the weekend at around $546 million domestically, which would make it the eighth-highest-grossing movie of all time and also put it past The Dark Knight's $534 million.

Infinity War has also earned over $800 million internationally so far, which already puts the film well past the $1 billion mark. Based on its performance and current projects, it's possible that Infinity War could gross up to $2 billion globally, but it would need to maintain course in order to even come close to that milestone, of which only two movies have ever achieved in film history: The Force Awakens and Avatar.

Of course, the Russos' Avengers: Infinity War was always expected to have historic success, especially for the superhero movie genre, and it's definitely coming to fruition in all corners of the world. Continued success in China, coupled with its North American wins, will have Infinity War at or near the top of the box office for quite some time, depending on how long the movie stays in theaters with all the competition on the horizon. The question is, does it stand a chance at challenging The Force Awakens' insane $936 million domestic gross?

Unfortunately for Marvel, The Force Awakens' commercial progression is already well ahead of Infinity War's pace. It stood had $686 million by this point. So, while Infinity War could easily cross the $700 million mark and possibly surpass Avatar's $760 million total, reaching The Force Awakens remains quite a tall task. But, even if it falls short of that number, Avengers: Infinity War has already become one of the biggest movies ever made.
