Kingo of the Eternals takes on the AvengersCaptain America in a newly revealed cover for Eternals #11, on sale in print and digital April 13. The Eternals have reasserted themselves over the past year, and now they are on a collision course with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in the upcoming Judgment Day crossover. Esad Ribic’s epic cover captures Captain America locked in combat with Kingo.

For more than 45 years, the Eternals have been an integral part of the Marvel Universe. Created by the legendary Jack Kirby, the Eternals are an off-shoot of humanity, created eons ago by the Celestials, a race of space faring “gods” who tamper with the evolution of worlds. The Eternals made their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut last year. While the film was received mixed reactions from fans and critics, it was still a box office success, and introduced these amazing characters to mainstream audiences. The Eternals have made a grand comeback in the comics, in a new series written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Esad Ribic. As the Eternals returned, the seeds for their conflict with the Avengers have been sown, as the Eternals learned the team is using the corpse of a Celestial as their base—tantamount to blasphemy in the Eternals' eyes. And now, in the epic new storyline Judgment Day, these two teams will collide. Eternals #11 is written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Guiu Villanova.

Esad Ribic’s cover to Eternals #11 was revealed in a press release on Marvel’s website. Set in the icy wastelands near Avengers Mountain (created from a corpse of a hollowed-out Celestial) the cover shows Kingo, blades out, looking to land a death blow on Captain America. However, the Star-Spangled Avenger is not going lightly, as his shield is raised high in the air, blocking Kingo’s strikes. The press release reveals the Avengers have had enough of the Eternals’ secretive nature, and demand answers—but the Eternals have contacted their gods, leading to an explosive conflict between the two teams.

Eternals 11 cover, showing Kingo fighting Captain America

Kieron Gillen and Esad Ribic redefined the Eternals and their mythology for the 21stcentury, highlighting how truly alien the group is as well as how they interact with humanity. The Eternals venerate the Celestials and seeing the Avengers openly “desecrate” the body of one of their gods is a serious affront to them, one they cannot let stand. Will the Avengers be a match for the Eternals? Or will the Eternals capitalize on the return of their gods, and end the Avengers once and for all? And what new secrets will come to light? It is worth noting that several Eternals, including Gilgamesh and Sersi, were once Avengers, but that may mean nothing now.

Marvel has teased that the Judgment Day crossover will also involve the X-Men, though what part they have to play has yet to be revealed. But one thing is for sure: Judgment Day is coming for both the Avengers and the Eternals, and this new cover depicting Captain America taking on Kingo captures what is sure to be one of the event's biggest battles.
