Avengers: Endgame Directors DID Consider A Drastically Different Marketing Plan

Avengers Endgame Trailer - Steve at Peggy Carters Funeral

Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo reveal they did actually consider releasing no new marketing for the film whatsoever. The 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Endgame also wraps up the initial arc of the massively popular superhero franchise. Called the Infinity Saga by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, the story of the first three phases of the MCU will conclude in Endgame when it releases next month. As such, Avengers: Endgame is one of the most highly anticipated films, but it's also Marvel Studios' most secretive project ever.

Picking up after the cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War, the Avengers: Endgame trailers haven't given too much away - and they may be misdirecting or outright lying to fans. The Avengers: Endgame teaser trailer released late last year, revealing the first footage from the film. While fans tried to make sense of what it means for the upcoming Marvel blockbuster, there's still plenty we don't know about the movie. Although the footage released in the Avengers: Endgame teasers so far has offered a few answers, it's also inspired even more questions about what fans can expect. Now, though, the Avengers: Endgame directors reveal fans may have gotten much less in terms of the film's marketing.

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine [via CBM], directors Anthony and Joe Russo were asked if they considered releasing zero marketing for the movie. Previously, it was rumored Marvel was considering a very different marketing plan for Avengers 4, though the nature of that plan was left to speculation. Now, Joe Russo confirmed they did consider revealing no marketing at all for Avengers: Endgame. He said:

We did. We talked about all scales of marketing. The thing that's most important to us is that we preserve the surprise of the narrative. When I was a kid and saw The Empire Strikes Back at 11am on the day it opened, and sat there until 10pm watching it back to back to back, it so profoundly moved me because I didn't know a damn thing about the story I was going to watch. We're trying to replicate that experience.

Fans are no doubt glad that the Russos decided against releasing no new Avengers: Endgame marketing whatsoever, especially as the trailers have so far included little moments that manage to get viewers hyped while not spoiling any of the story. One such moment is the meeting between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Carol Danvers aka. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) in the latest Avengers: Endgame trailer. The character-driven clip reveals little, if anything about the film's story, but it's a scene that features two favorite characters and, as such, has worked exceptionally well to increase fan anticipation for the Marvel Studios movie.

After all, perhaps even more so than seeing how the Infinity Saga storyline concludes, MCU fans are looking forward to seeing their favorite characters interacting - especially those who haven't met onscreen before. Certainly, Avengers: Endgame promises action, but fans also can't wait to see how the movie develops Thor and Carol's friendship beyond the small clip of their meeting in the latest trailer. Thankfully, with it looking like the Avengers: Endgame runtime will be closer to three hours, the movie will have plenty of time for both action and character-driven moments. And with the film's directors holding back as much as they can, fans will be able to go into Avengers: Endgame relatively unspoiled.
