Avengers: Endgame has officially surpassed James Cameron's Titanic at the worldwide box office, and the director offers congratulations to the MCU. After the massive success of 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, it didn't take a genius to predict that its follow-up, Avengers: Endgame, would prove an even bigger hit. After all, Marvel fans spent an entire year wondering exactly how Thanos' fateful snap would be undone, and all the dead heroes with films already in development would manage to come back and appear in them.
Needless to say, while Avengers: Endgame is by no means a flawless film, what issues it does have tend to be far outweighed by what it does right. Critics loved Endgame even more than Infinity War, and many fans are already declaring it the best MCU movie to date. Time will tell if Endgame is still as breathtaking years and multiple viewings down the road, but for now, it's clear that Marvel Studios and directors Joe and Anthony Russo knocked this one right out of the park.
Avengers: Endgame has now been the #1 film - both domestically and worldwide - for two straight weekends, and looks likely to three-peat, at least stateside. This is despite the challenge of new arrival Detective Pikachu bringing the weight of the Pokemon franchise with it. As of weekend two, Endgame had already grossed over $2 billion worldwide, and has now officially surpassed Titanic to become the #2 film of all-time worldwide. Titanic director James Cameron seemingly holds no ill will against the film, posting the following message of congratulations to his Twitter account.
While it's nice to see a director of Cameron's stature in film history offer a friendly bit of praise to Marvel Studios for Avengers: Endgame's success, one wonders if he's truly that pleased with the outcome. After all, Cameron famously wondered when superhero fatigue would set in last year, and audiences would grow tired of comic book movies. To be fair, he also said he loved Marvel's movies, and Kevin Feige was more pleased that Cameron was a fan of his work than upset about his issues with the genre as a whole. MCU - and Avatar - star Zoe Saldana also went on to defend Cameron, and argue that his statements were made out to be more negative than intended.
Speaking of Avatar, one also wonders how long it'll be before Avengers: Endgame climbs over Cameron's other all-time box office hit on the worldwide chart. As of this writing, Endgame remains over $500 million away from surpassing Avatar's 2.8 billion dollar haul, which seems like a lot, but at Endgame's pace, it could happen faster than anyone expects. Thus, Cameron might be issuing another congratulatory Tweet in the next few weeks.
