Chris Hemsworth's Thor and Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie nearly kissed at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen some characters become instant hits over the years, but has also had a tougher time figuring out other characters. Even though Thor has been around since 2011, he actually fell into the latter category. Hemsworth did what was asked of him to start and eventually grew a bit bored with the character, but then he found a second life through the comedic approach of director Taika Waititi.

It was in Thor: Ragnarok that Hemsworth's comedic ability was put at the forefront of the character, and his third solo film brought him into contact with a whole bunch of new characters. One of them was Thompson's Valkyrie, who audiences immediately embraced as a strong leader and powerful warrior. The pairing of Hemsworth and Thompson generated great results - to the point where Sony teamed them up again for Men in Black: International - and left fans wanting to see more of them together.

After Valkyrie was left out of Avengers: Infinity War, she and Thor were reunited in Avengers: Endgame. There isn't a ton of screen time given to the pair, but they do share an important moment during the final few minutes of the film. Thor decides to leave Earth and New Asgard behind to join the Guardians of the Galaxy, and names Valkyrie as their new ruler in the process. This happens right before the two say goodbye (for now), and co-director Anthony Russo revealed in an interview with SiriusXM that the scene almost became romantic.

There's a funny beat. If you remember at the end of the film where Thor is saying goodbye to Valkyrie, and he's basically turning Asgard over to her. In the endings we felt like we wanted to keep it a little tight, so we were looking for some stuff to squeeze there. He had this beat with Valkryie where after he sort of turns over the kingdom to her, she puts her arm on his shoulder and he sort of starts to lean in for a kiss. And she goes, 'What are you doing?' And he goes, 'Oh I thought the touch..' She's like, 'Yeah, it's a goodbye touch. A tap I'm giving you.' It was a really funny beat but we cut it.

Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie

While it's far from explicit, Thor: Ragnarok does tease the idea that there's a small bit of romance in the relationship between Thor and Valkyrie, and the script originally featured a heavier dose of it. This would've been another hint toward such a possibility, that also could be played for laughs in the film. It's also important to note that fellow co-director Joe Russo then said that this moment was largely improved by Hemsworth and Thompson, so it was them toying with this possibility all on their own. Based on the scene described, it would appear that Thor has interest in Valkyrie, but that the feeling is not mutual with Valkyrie.

There are a certain amount of fans who would like to see Thor and Valkyrie's relationship evolve in this direction, but it's unclear if it actually will. The two are separated for the time being, and could be on very different paths for the foreseeable future. Thor could find a new love interest during his galactic travels, while Thompson has previously expressed her own desires for Valkyrie's romantic interests. With a pitch for Thor 4 from Waititi reportedly out there, it could be up to him to advance the Thor/Valkyrie relationship as he sees fit.
